"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. πŸŽ€

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. πŸ’—

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

πŸ’— This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.πŸ’•

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Congratulations to store manager Bilal from our Wembley store who has been named Colleague of the Year and Leader of the Year in the Proud to be Asda awards.

The judges said Bilal "combines vision, integrity and strong communication to inspire and motivates his team". First of all he's a very good human being", "The things that really make Bilal stand out is setting really high standards", "What I respect most is that he always leads by example", "He's made us feel more like a family." Congratulations to Asda customer Hamad who's won free fuel worth up to Β£1,500 for the next 12 months after finding one of our golden tickets while shopping in Asda Wembley at the weekend.

Hamad found the ticket hidden in the store and was in shock to win. As part of our year-long celebrations to mark our landmark 60th birthday, we've hidden 40 golden tickets in stores across the UK. Between now and the end of the August bank holiday weekend, colleagues will be secretly hiding the tickets and awaiting the lucky winners.

They will be posing for selfies, giving out sweets and chocolates – and high fives of course! Farzana, founder of the Desi Doll Company which makes the toy versions of the characters, will also be in our stores to chat to kids and parents. Omar and Hana will be at Asda Wembley from 10am to noon, Asda Park Royal from 1pm to 3pm and Asda Colindale from 4pm to 6pm. See you there!

When a home shopping driver at our Wembley store suffered a slipped disc during his deliveries and had to be taken to hospital, our colleague Miten stepped in to make sure customers got their groceries on time.

Miten, who only started working at the store seven months ago, had just finished his shift when he heard about the emergency and quickly volunteered to get a taxi to Kilburn to pick up the van, which was safely parked up, and take the shopping to the remaining customers. He has now won the regional gold award in the Asda service superstar awards for his efforts after being nominated by store manager Mohsin, who said: "We are all very proud of Miten. He's always very calm and polite and nothing is too much trouble for him. He is one of our five-star rated drivers. We really appreciate what Miten has been doing in the time he has been with us and he's become an integral part of the Wembley online operation." The other driver is now recovering at home after receiving hospital treatment.

Our Wembley store is taking part in a trial to make it easier for blind and partially sighted customers to navigate their way through the store whilst they do their shopping.

Customers using the GoodMaps smartphone app can pinpoint their location within one metre of accuracy and then communicate directions to product groups or areas via audio, enlarged visual, and touch commands, and can search for key landmarks within the store such as the pharmacy, toilets and tills. The app can also search for specific product categories on the shelves with the aim being to guide the customer as close as possible to the item they are looking for. Marc Powell from the RNIB said: β€œIt’s so great to see an influential retailer such as Asda proactively championing accessibility through technology like GoodMaps. This is an encouraging step forward in creating a more inclusive world and an example of how improving accessibility for people with sight loss can actually enhance the customer experience for everyone."
