Norman's Pie, Mash & Liquor Conquest

Norman's Pie, Mash & Liquor Conquest Having started eating Pie, Mash & Liquor at the old age of 10 at M.

Back in March 2024 I set out to visit all the Traditional Pie & Mash shops that were still trading at that time, and I will include new ones as they open

These reviews are my own personal opinion based on real experiences of eating at each of the shops Manze's in Tower Bridge Road (the oldest surviving shop) I have always loved what is affectionately known as 'The Food of the Gods'..... fast food made of simple ingredients that remains better value than all of the typical Fast Food chains, and is honest grub..... none of your uber-processed muck here. In March 2024 I had visited three of my regular shops in a week, other people in a Facebook Group that I had recently joined suggested that I visit some others..... so using their recommendations I drew up a short-list of about 20 shops. Almost immediately my eyes were opened to what else was out there outside of my few favourites..... so when I had done 10 different shops I made the decision to visit all the traditional Pie & Mash shops that were trading at the time (May 2024), all quite significant challenge given that there were approx 65 different shops trading then......

As I am writing this I have done 60 different shops (of 67), a couple have sadly closed, but happily a couple of new ones have opened. So, this is a timeline of events from the 1st shop in March 2024 and one that will culminate at Flo's in Folkestone.... I only started doing reviews of the shops after I had done about 10 of them, so I plan to revisit those and add a review for each.....

Okay, I will shut up now.... hope that you enjoy my honest reviews, but keep in mind they are simply my opinion, everyone has their favourites.... but I have remained impartial and have always made it about the food, the service and the premises

and onto my second one today, and possibly last this week, I took a combination of train and tube to get myself to a little part of what used to be Essex that I really like, Chingford…. and to Robins Pie N Mash

Ordered my, now standard 1&1 and had a large orange squash (because Wendy Paulding says I should 😉) - love the Pie, Mash and Liquor from Robins….

Said a quick hello to the lovely Zoe and as I went to sit down a lovely lady asked if I was Norman, as she overheard me talking about the Pie and Mash app to Zoe….. so I said I was, introduced myself and shared a table with her and her son, was lovely to meet you Jenny Smith , really enjoyed chatting to you and your son 😊

the 91st shop - visited 30th September 2026

Despite doing a triple header yesterday, again I found myself out and about, visiting outlets that sell traditional Pie & Mash..... this time to validate a cafe that sells it before it is added to the Pie and Mash app.... so off I went up the A1 a little to St Neots, and to Moore's Walk Cafe, that is now my 91st shop in two and half years (and I don't even like Pie & Mash, ain't that right Lee Toblat 😂…. sorry peeps, private joke, of course I like it, just a little.... 😉)

The cafe itself is lovely, very modern, spotlessly clean, with a great cafe menu - and of course, traditional Pie & Mash.... the pies and liquor is supplied by Maureen's in Chrisp Street, Poplar

My offering....

The pie - as it was from Maureen's it was already a good start..... well cooked, hot with a nice crispy top, served hot - oh wait, I have said that (just trying to get across how hot it was)

The mash - like all cafes, they have other dishes on the menu that have mash with them, so there is butter in the mash, but it was quite light and far from over-powering - and the texture was good and the portion size was good too

The liquor - superb consistency, often a concern if not made in-house, and hot

a great little place to eat, especially with people that do not eat Pie & Mash as you have Pie & Mash leaving them to choose from an extensive menu.... there was also a great selection of foods for the kids

after the fantastic time that we all had yesterday we completed a triple header as Steve Goodwin and I popped across Bromley to Cafe Pie & Mash for what, for me, was my 90th different outlet selling traditional Pie & Mash in recent times.....

I have been planning to get to this one for a while, but there was never the time, so as I was on leave from work I had to get over there. They sell pies from The Old Cockney in Chatterton Road but, interestingly, they make their own liquor, which is quite unusual for a cafe.....

It's a lovely spacious cafe with a great menu, but as we were for one thing, even though I skipped the mash, as I was already quite full.....

The Pie - as already mentioned, these are from The Old Cockney, was served a little too crispy for me, normally I do not mind, but the owner apologised afterwards that he did over-do the pie a bit

The Liquor - now this was the star..... it was so damn tasty, full of parsley and a good consistency - I really could have just drank this from a cup, it was that good

Off out on my travels again today seeing as I am not working again this week…. first stop was the Bubble & Sausage cafe in New Eltham where I met up with one of my good friends, Steve Goodwin, for what is Pie & Mash outlet No 89 since March 2024 for me….

They are a licensed seller of Arments pies and liquor, so immediately you knew that you were going to get a quality bit of food…..

Pies - you could easily just close your eyes and imagine that you were sitting in Westmorland Road eating it…. Lovely pastry on top and a great tasting bit of minced beef

The mash - a generous portion….

The liquor - good consistency and taste

The cafe itself is on a main road with a lovely partitioned off bit of seating and the service was very good 😊

following our great 1&1 in S&R Kelly's, Jeff Burton and I made our way along Bethnal Green Road where we took a few tube trains and the 158 bus up to Higham Hill Road in Walthamstow..... a quick walk and we were soon at Barneys Pie&mash to have our second 1&1 in about 90 mins......

Now I always enjoy a visit to Barneys, not just for the excellent Pie & Mash but also to catch up with Tom, the owner of Barneys, I love chatting with Tommy each time I go in, and also to see the rapport he has with his customers, even those on their first visit, even explaining the dish itself and its origins and how it should be eaten to customers that are trying Pie & Mash for the first time - he is a proper character, and the banter that you experience in the shop is superb

Again we went for a 1&1 and were soon feeding our faces again, a little slower than normal as the excellent pies were very hot.... and sadly I was not able to finish all of what was a very good sized portion of mash (I tend to eat little and often these days)

I love going around to these shops with Jeff and others as they look to complete their own personal milestones.... with Jeff hoping to emulate myself by completing Norman's Conquest, something that our good friend Eamonn Staunton has already done and Steve Goodwin is one shop away from..... will be great to see others complete it too....

No new outlets for me today, but the first shop was one that I had only been to once previously and sad to say I was not a fan, but I finally got a chance to take my own advice today to give every shop a second chance and I am so pleased I did...... and it also gave me a chance to warm up for my charity walk on Sunday in London for Diabetes UK

A quick walk from Bethnal Green Overground station and I found myself outside S&R Kelly's on Bethnal Green Road..... I was meeting with the Pie and Mash app developer and all round good fella Jeff Burton, but I was early so I introduced myself to Neil Kelly and shared a few stories with him, had me enthralled throughout, he is a 4th generation Kelly (no connection with G Kelly's but there is with T&J Kelly's in Loughton) and get some photos of the great artwork on the walls of the shop.... see extra photos

Once Jeff arrived we both tucked into what was a very good 1&1, the pies were full of flavour and the liquor was infused with plenty of parsley

A great start to what turned out to be a fantastic day

again on Wednedsay and moving on swiftly from No 87 comes, wait while I count please 😂, No 88, and a quick trip by train from Southend Victoria took me to Rayleigh, a lovely little village with a couple of nice pubs, a great little high street and Cafe &Pie & Mash Rayleigh

After exercising my right arm with a quick pint in the Half Moon, a great little old pub at the top of the high street, I strolled down to Star Cafe for my second lot of Pie & Mash

The cafe is big, with plenty of seating, and it was pretty busy…. I ordered my 1&1 with a strong tea and I was seated and awaiting my food, and I did not wait more than a few minutes before it was in front of me….

The pie - they get theirs from Tony’s, the man himself delivers them, so I was already smiling as I like Tony’s pies - was served hot, just like Tony’s 😊

The mash - was just that, and had that rustic texture that I love

The liquor - hot, great consistency, plenty of parsley, just what the good doctor ordered 😊

Had a lovely chat with the owner, Bobby and, I think, his wife - about what I do and about his history in Pie & Mash… it transpires that he is linked with the guys at Aroma Cafe where I was earlier, and also George's Cafe Pitsea, so you could say that dishing up good Pie & Mash is in their blood

Another place I can certainly recommend 👍🏻

the 87th shop - visited 23rd September 2026

I was out and about again on Wednesday, visiting a couple of outlets selling traditional Pie & Mash…. and shop No 87 for me (slowly slowly catchy Eamonn 🎣😂)…

I took myself off to Sarfend and to Aroma Cafe in Weston Road, a lovely clean and welcoming cafe, introduced myself to Ali, one of the owners, after I had ordered my normal 1&1 that I almost always do when I know I am eating somewhere else too….

The pie - as they are from Maureen’s I was onto a good thing…. Served hot and lightly crispy on top, really good 😊

Mash - yes, it was mash…. A little texture to it which I like

The liquor - served hot and with a great consistency….. those of that eat Pie & Mash in cafe’s will appreciate how liquor does not travel well, but this was perfect

Overall it was a great experience and I would happily recommend it to others, especially if you are eating with friends or family who do not want Pie & Mash

It’s odd eating alone, but I do vaguely remember being Billy No Mates, but I prefer sharing such experiences with friends 😊

Was out and about yesterday, having fun, meeting friends and eating Pie & Mash.....

first stop was Goddards at Greenwich as I wanted to touch base with the owners, Jeff & Kane..... even before they opened there was a little queue forming, and I introduced myself to Jeff as he opened the door and had a quick chat as I was being served a 1&1 minus the mash (this would not be my only Pie & Mash today) - big well-filled pies and very tasty liquor

then I made my way to Orpington (via Dunton Green as I nodded off and missed my stop 😂) and was met at the station by Steve Goodwin to head over to Scott’s traditional Pie & Mash..... and was surprised to see Colin Dove sitting there just finishing his Pie & Mash. Had a quick chat and catch-up with owner Blake Lewis before sitting down for a 1&1 - love the pies and liquor here, so tasty

for the third stop, Steve and I headed over to Leyton Orient, and met up with 'The Ambassador' Eamonn Staunton, fresh from achieving visiting 100 outlets selling traditional Pie & Mash (a true Pie-oneer like myself and a few others) , to watch the football and partake in another 1&1 as they serve Pie & Mash from Leytonstone Pie & Mash a- s it is my intention to go every shop, cafe, pub, stall and mobile that sells Pie & Mash

All in all a great day with great friends.... 😊
