Asda Roehampton pharmacy colleague Ayesha has this message for women who receive an invitation for a routine NHS mammogram – "Please go, as it could save your life"

Ayesha was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2023 and is a strong supporter of our Tickled Pink breast cancer campaign which is this year celebrating its 30th anniversary. She said: "I'd received an invite at 50 years old to go for a routine mammogram and I'm so glad I went. The report wasn't great, so they did further tests, including a biopsy. That's when they found the cancer in my left breast.

"My experience taught me the importance of self-care and how important the NHS screening is. I would like to say to all the women, please don't ignore your NHS invites for your mammogram. It's a simple procedure that could save your life."

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. πŸŽ€

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. πŸ’—

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

πŸ’— This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.πŸ’•

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

As part of the fundraising and awareness raising campaign for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer campaign my b**b suit from charity partner CoppaFeel! has arrived πŸ’•

This is such a great way to get our message across and get everyone checking their chest. As I walked through the store with it so many of my colleagues wanted to try it on and show their support.

I had the pleasure of visiting St Paul's Lunch Club, one of the groups I nominated for the Better together grant from the Asda Foundation.

What a lovely afternoon I had! Greeting everyone and learning their names was first. Getting everyone seated and a drink of squash was next. Then we served the lunch of shepherd's pie and veg. Everyone seemed to enjoy their lunch. After a quick clean up, we had a few games of bingo, which was great fun. Sam was a great caller and had everyone singing. For these people the club is a God send, they get a hot meal, get to socialise and for some of them Sam and the volunteers are the only people they see on a regular basis.

We said goodbye to our much-loved bakery colleague Hazel who has retired after 36 years of service with Asda.

Hazel's an avid football fan and a season ticket holder with Arsenal, so she is looking forward to watching their title defence next season.

She received lots of gifts and was totally surprised by her lunch party, having said she "didn't want a fuss". We will all miss you Hazel. Wishing you a great retirement – you deserve it!

Asda regional senior director Mohsin was visiting our store, so came and said a few words, thanking Hazel for her service.

On Saturday I attended Putney Vale Estate Summer Fair.

I took a donation of assorted ice-cream, cones, sprinkles and sauces. It was a lovely day, the sun shone and everyone was enjoying themselves. They had a drumming workshop which was very popular, a taster session in karate, arts and crafts including spray painting, all different activities in the communal garden, sensory play and lots more including the ice-cream stall.

Well done to everyone who helped with this event. It was a lovely day.

Back in 2024 Kings Oak Primary School got a grassroots grant from Asda Foundation for Β£800.

They are a mainstream school with specialist resource provisions for children with autism. Their playground was in need of some TLC.I spoke with Brenda from the PSA she was concerned that there was no shade for the children, they had a gazebo, but it needed lots of work to make it usable.I am happy to report that after a bit of a delay ( unavoidable) the work has been completed.

I met up with the lovely ladies from the PSA who expressed their gratitude to Asda Foundation and myself for enabling them to do the renovations. Here are some pictures. Looking great, well done everyone.

I had the pleasure of going to Frylands Wood Scout Outdoor Centre.

I was meeting Chris Ellinson in the carpark. What an amazing place - 60 acres of woodlands with all sorts of activities for the young ones, nature trails, a climbing wall, archery, tomahawk throwing, disc golf, cave climbing ( a series of tunnels and such to replicate caves), blind trail and so much more.! They have facilities for groups to stay over night or they can just spend the day. Here the children learn so much through play, it helps with confidence, leadership skills , learning to interact with not only their peers but adults too, problem solving, negotiation skills and so much more. These are skills they will need throughout their lives and they get to have so much fun while learning! In the pictures are Chris who is the volunteer deputy- chair and Jason who is the deputy manager of the centre. Most of the people who help out here are volunteers. The main objective is to provide affordable opportunities for young people in our community and not just scouts.I really enjoyed looking around the centre. Well done guys, great job.

I went to visit our local Wandsworth Foodbank. We have a trolley in store and for food drives I always invite them into store. This was my first visit, I was blown away by the whole operation. Jenni was my guide around the facility. She explained to me how the process worked, it's so much more than I expected.

Not only do guests get help with food and hygiene products, they will get help will any other issues they maybe facing, ie housing, dept all manner of support can be obtained via the foodbank.

I then helped with sorting some of the food and getting everything put in the correct spaces ready for a packer to come along and pack into the relevant parcels ready to send out.

I gave the volunteers one of my Special Recognition awards for all they do for our community. Well done guys, great job πŸ‘ πŸ‘ – Tina, Asda community champion
