So much more space to bake in than we had before, and I love it 💜

This room gets a lot of sunshine so it's usually always bright, and I made us go very neutral for this space cos if we chose a colour for the units and I hate them in a year, we're stuck with them for the next 15.

Can't wait to start on some autumn bakes in here soon 🍂🥮

Can we talk about the hardest part of running a small baking business?

It's not the baking. It's not the cleaning. It's not even the admin, although the latter two are not exactly fun!

It's the showing up. And the guilt when you just can't.

I haven't posted in a while. We came back from the kitchen refurb, I worked through a backlog of orders, and then life, as it tends to do, had other plans.

Our sausage dog became suddenly unable to walk. What we suspected turned out to be IVDD, and he needed emergency spinal surgery. He's two days post-op right now, still in the hospital, and we've got anywhere from one to three+ months of recovery ahead of us to help him hopefully walk again. 🐾

And through it all, you still have to function.

Every year since I started Untainted Tastes in 2019, I think it gets a little harder to keep up; with social media, with life, with the mental and physical load. Social media alone is a completely different beast to what it was back then, when you could just post a picture without any thought.

I don't really have a neat ending to this post. I just wanted to show up today, and be honest, because that's always felt more important than pretending everything is fine and posting a pretty picture.

We're here. We're baking. And we're taking it one day at a time 💜

A little update as I had planned to be back this week 🥺💜

The kitchen refurb has taken longer than planned which honestly, I think anyone who's ever had building work done will completely relate with. It's been a stressful and overwhelming few weeks, and I cannot wait for it to be done.

Unfortunately I've not had the brain capacity to update everyone anywhere near as much as I'd liked to, it's honestly taken everything I've had.

Not much has happened over the past week, we've had flooring laid yesterday which has then uncovered a separate problem elsewhere 😫 We've also got unfinished bits we need to rectify.

Now we're looking at a delay of around another week or so. We also have a much needed and already planned long weekend away coming up, which feels very well timed right now, not going to lie.

Week 2 of the kitchen renovation 🔨

Let's just say I'm glad I added an extra two weeks to the builders timescale!

It's not been straightforward but the new plaster is finally on and dried and it's onto building the kitchen next and flooring which has unfortunately been delayed 😞

Update of week three to come and hopefully it'll start to look more like a kitchen 🙏🏼🛠️

The kitchen is getting a glow up ✨ and is temp closed for its big refurb!

Walls are coming down, plastering is going in, new kitchen, new flooring. We're not looking forward to the chaos but cannot wait for the transformation.

Our last dispatch has gone out, and we won't be baking again until the kitchen is done, but we're hoping to be back up and running from early-ish September.

August is usually our quietest month with summer holidays, and with another heatwave forecast this week, it's probably the best time to get it done.

We've had quite a few messages recently asking about whether our bakes are suitable for specific dietary requirements...

💜Our kitchen is dairy free and egg free...always has been, always will be 🌱
🖤We do make products without gluten and without soya, but both ingredients are present in our kitchen, so we cannot guarantee our products are suitable for allergy sufferers.

The good news? Some products that have been off the website during the heatwave were made back in stock 🎉

The not so good news? The forecast is looking like 30 degrees again this week!! So I'll be completely honest with you... if temperatures hit what's predicted, those products won't be dispatched in the heat, even with the extra protective packaging I've invested in this year for the first time in 7 years of sending bakes.

This summer has genuinely been something else. But your bakes arriving in the best condition possible will always come first 💜

Okay, I need to tell you something...

I don't do celebration cakes anymore.🥺

I've had a few enquiries come in recently (more in the last two weeks than all year!) but I've had to politely let people down this week and it didn't feel right not to explain why properly. So here we are.

A few years ago, cakes were a big part of what I did. But a combination of things changed that, and honestly, the cost of living has a lot to answer for!

Let me be real with you, which I'm sure you've heard before but the cost of literally everything, water, electric, ingredients, packaging, and minimum wage ... A basic celebration cake takes anywhere from 4 to 6 hours to make. Which means a basic cake priced fairly and honestly needs to start at a minimum of £90.

And look, that price is completely justified. The skill, the time, the ingredients, it all adds up. But it's also meant that the demand for celebration cakes has changed, and for a one-woman business like mine, keeping constant cake-specific stock on hand for sporadic orders just isn't practical anymore.

So I made the decision to step back from them and focus on what you lot love most and is most consistent.

Our personalised loaded brownie slabs, cookie pies, blondies, and mixed boxes. Many of our options can all be customised with a name, message, or topper and they make just as much of a statement at a celebration as any cake would 💜

If you've got a birthday, anniversary, or occasion coming up, we've still absolutely got you. Just maybe not in cake form 😄 And we've always been known for gifting and celebration bakes but that's a story for another day!
