One of my go to university meals: lamb shoulder buried in cous cous, from one of the early Jamie Oliver books. We’d regularly have a student house outing to Sainsburys on a Sunday evening to buy whatever had been heavily discounted (lamb shoulders and £1 whole salmon featured heavily). We’d then stay up until the early hours cooking, listening to records and playing videogames. Not much has changed.

I hadn’t made this in decades, but Ute (who does the café flowers) wasn’t sure what to do with a lamb shoulder she’d had in the freezer for a couple of years, and I was more than happy to cook one without having to take out a new student loan. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to thrash her and Peter at International Superstar Soccer 98.

No lamb shoulders in the café this weekend but we do have lamb & beef kebabs with homemade labneh and mango & lemon pickle. We also have chicken kabsa, roasted aubergines, Yemeni potatoes, tahini and yoghurt sauce (the best!), herb salad, black eyed bean falafels and lots more.

Mixed grill kebab for my lunch. If you order one of everything on the menu then you too can assemble a mixed grill kebab in the garden. It wouldn’t be a cost effective way to buy a kebab though.

In other news we have for the first time in years. What could be better than a glass of Steady Rolling Man in the sunshine, watching the gliders and eating an extremely expensive menu hack kebab?

The Popol Vuh is the most significant surviving Mayan text, and we’ve been drawing inspiration from it for our current Mexican lunch menu - tomorrow is your last opportunity to sample it! Popping up for our roasted tomato, feta and leek quiche might just be the beginning of something big…

This weekend is the last weekend for our Mexican lunch menu. We have cochinita pibil (slow cooked pork shoulder with a dried chilli and orange sauce) or squash mole for mains, with a host of delicious side dishes and extras, including topped nachos and prawns with a mango sauce.

We went sea fishing in Mexico and caught lots of lane and grey snapper, amongst other things. Fortunately we had a freezer so we processed all the fish (with the bluntest knife I have ever used!) and ate barbecued fish, baked fish, fish cakes and ceviche for a week!

The weather couldn’t be much better for sitting out in the café garden tomorrow - sunny but not too hot and light wind. We’ve got Mexican platters for lunch, and our usual brunch menu plus poached eggs with wilted greens and hollandaise.

We’ve been trying to make the most of the weather and walked to school across the fields last week, and the effort was rewarded with St George’s mushrooms for lunch!
