Gowri's Kitchen

Gowri's Kitchen Authentic Tamil Food cooked lovingly by a Tamil grandma. All dishes are from Sri Lankan and South Indian cuisine. For individual orders and parties/events.

Traditional meals, Street Food, Party Food and Snacks. COLLECTION ONLY at the moment. My name is Gowri and I moved to UK in December 2020 to join my daughters and my only grandchild here. I am very happy and excited for my future here. Since my move I have been very busy learning English and working towards my Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety for Catering, the latter which I was awarded in October

2021. I continue to attend both English and Computer classes as a way of developing my skills and as an opportunity to integrate and start my new life here. My roots are South Indian/North Sri Lankan - I am Tamil, and come from a very large family. My mum was one of 15 children! So I grew up in a culture where meal times were all about connection, nurture and family gatherings. One of my fondest memories is of the tradition of my dad mixing a large bowl of rice and various curries, and we all sit around him, and he will feed us grown adult children by lovingly placing one 'rice ball mix' into our hands. Cooking and feeding is perceived as a representation of love and nurture in our culture. This is one of the reasons I love cooking, especially when I see people enjoying the food. To see them happy makes me happy. Sri Lanka is a tiny tropical island in the Indian Ocean and is often affectionately called 'The Pearl of India'. Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country but a place with several religions and the cuisine therefore also boast multi-cultural influences and practices, including South India, Middle East, Dutch and Portuguese. These are reflected in the SriLankan cuisine, which is very unique.

Happy Pongal! πŸ₯°

Today is Thai Pongal, celebrated by Tamil Hindus and by Hindus around the world, though it is known by different names in various Indian languages and regions.

It is our version of Harvest Festival and it's a celebration to thank the Sun, Mother Nature and all the farm animals that help contribute to a great harvest! ☺️

The tradition is to cook some 'pongal', which is a type of sweet rice pudding cooked with jaggery, and also some side dishes/other snacks.

I made 'pongal' and also some 'vadai', which are savory doughnuts served with coconut sambol. I made the coconut sambol with freshly grated coconut...yummy! All of these are vegan and are often served as party snacks, drink snacks, or starters/appetizers. Please get in touch if you like to order some from me in the future 😊

Happy New Year to everyone.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday 😊

I like to say thank you to all of you who have supported my business in 2025. I'm excited to continue cooking my food for you in 2026.

Today's post is slightly different: Not about cooking or food. I know a lot of anxious students will be revising for their upcoming exams soon. I like to introduce my brilliant one and only grandchild, Vash, who is a 2nd year Astrophysics university student. He offers tuition to all ages up to A-levels, especially revision and exam support. This is his website: https://www.vashtutoring.co.uk/about

He is working hard to save up for his final year at university and will appreciate any extra income and support. Thank you 😊

Welcome to Vash Tutoring Hi! I’m Vash. I know thinking about exams can be really scary. I’ve been there, only just recently, so I get it. I’m hoping with the right support, you’ll be able to reach your predicted grade. When I was home-schooled, the support of my tutors really helped me.I’m...

AUTHENTIC SRILANKAN FOOD DURING OCTOBER - NOVEMBER

Hi, this is Gowri.

I hope you are well and having a lovely weekend!

I got some bittersweet news: I had the great honour of having a couple of new catering orders for special occasions. Unfortunately, I couldn't accept them as I'll be away for a month.

So to avoid any disappointment, I just want to let you know I won't be available for any orders between 15th October and 17th November. I'll be missing the autumn festive season here in the UKπŸŽƒπŸπŸ‚πŸŒ°πŸ‘» I will be available again for the Christmas festive season though.πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸΎπŸŽ

If you are interested in making any bookings for before and after the period I'll be away, please send me a text to 07770 955578. Text is always better than calls, because of my limited English. Many thanks in advance :)

I am sending you all my best wishes in advance for the upcoming celebrations: Diwali, Bonfire night and Halloween! :)

Srilankan coconut sambol made with freshly grated coconut and red onion. This condiment was served with idiyappam (string hoppers in English), daal and a prawn red curry.

The string hoppers are a traditional South Indian and Sri Lankan dish made from rice flour dough, formed into thin noodle-like strands and then steamed. They look like little nests of rice noodles, deliciously soft with a slightly springy texture. Great for those who crave a gluten-free meal! You can also replace the prawn dish with a vegetarian dish and easily have this as a vegan meal.

Spring hoppers are called idiyappam in Tamil and Malayalam, but Indiappa in Sinhalese.
