Some moments in coaching are particularly special, and this is definitely one of them.

I'm delighted to welcome Olly Culwick and Josh Sapwell to the Tennis Works Business Hub as they begin their exciting new chapter as Joint Head Coaches at Berkhamsted Tennis & Squash Club.

For me, this announcement is about more than just a new coaching partnership. I've known Josh since he was just seven years old, attending the junior squads I organised in Milton Keynes. Watching him develop from an enthusiastic young player into a multiple junior national champion and one of the world's top junior talents has been an incredible journey to witness.

Alongside Josh is Olly, a hugely respected coach who has been instrumental to tennis at Berkhamsted for over 25 years. Together, they bring a unique blend of experience, leadership, club knowledge, and high-performance expertise that will undoubtedly take the programme to new heights.

Through the Tennis Works Business Hub, I'm looking forward to supporting Olly and Josh as they continue to build, grow, and strengthen an outstanding tennis programme for their members and community.

Congratulations to both of you on this fantastic opportunity. The future is bright, and I'm excited to be part of the journey.

One of my favourite drills for improving control, creativity, and focus on the backhand is called: Backhand Rally to Cone Using Three Touches and 1 Touch Behind The Back.

This drill provides players the opportunity to:
✅ Work on their consistency in hitting a backhand
✅ Develop a better feel for their racquet
✅ Improve their hand/eye coordination
✅ Maintain balance when under significant pressure
✅ Bring some enjoyment and creativity into their training

The emphasis during this drill isn't necessarily just hitting the ball; but instead, it’s to learn how to control all three of the touches, remain relaxed, and find solutions for challenges on a tennis court. The more versatile you are in practice, the more confidence you will have in matches.

It is important to note, that top players do not simply repeat repetitive strokes, but they continue to discover new creative ways to challenge themselves in order To continue to improve.

More Of Something Does Not Mean Better!

As many athletes believe, training harder, longer, or without any breaks gives the best results in sport; however, too much effort can impede performance when you begin to lose sight of what it means to be well within yourself.

Dr. Callum included in his recent conversation with me is how many people overlook the relationship between mental fatigue and over-training. When a person does not allow their body time to recover, their ability to concentrate decreases, their ability to make sound decisions drops, they become less motivated and performance levels will systematically plateau – even if someone is working harder than they ever have!

Although they train very hard, the most superior athletes know when they have trained hard enough and therefore when to properly recover. In addition to being diligent about how they use their energy, the most elite athletes understand that taking time away from the sport is critical to achieving progress.

In many instances, the best thing you could do for your game is let your body and mind rest; in other words don't work again, but recover properly after you have trained.

Have you ever noticed yourself comparing your achievements to other people's? Have you ever wondered why you aren't "there" yet?

I see it in sport all the time, from coaching and business, to life in general too many people are comparing themselves to others rather than focusing on their own goals. The game of comparison can rob you of your confidence, motivation and enjoyment of getting from where you are to where you want to be.

In this week's episode, Dr. Callum shares his thoughts on how making comparisons to others can hold you back, the importance of concentrating on your own development, progression and purpose, and how this will further increase your performance and sense of fulfilment.

Truth is everybody is on their own journey at their own speed/pace and facing their own struggles. Therefore, the only comparison that is actually meaningful is the way that you were comparing yourself to who you were yesterday!

The ready position and split step are fundamental elements of tennis that often go unrecognized. Proper ex*****on of these two techniques allows every other aspect of your game to flow more smoothly.

As explained in this coaching video, by learning proper ready position and split step for an open stance forehand, you can develop improved balance, quicker response time, and easier court movement.

Many players concentrate solely on their forehand, yet the secret is to put yourself into position at the right time to allow for maximum efficiency.
