Some vintage classics. 2 sandalwoods and a Pi. The Pi is a handsome vanilla for men. Back when vanilla didn’t mean cakey gourmand. It just meant a little sweet.

Got patchouli Absolu - slowly crossing them off the list. Although was aghast to discovered I’d actually sold Italian Cypress about 2 years ago and completely forgotten about that. That said. If I hadn’t noticed in 2 years then probably it’s not that big a deal?

The Tragedy of Lord George. Who was he? And why was he so tragic? Nobody knows. But this is a very lovely perfume with quite a mental cap. I love it. But just maybe it’s a tad impractical?

It’s warm and versatile. A little boozy. A little sweet and a little woody. No sharp edges and no shattered conventions. A good “do it all” choice that’s polite enough for the office and hefty enough for a night out.

I feel kinda privileged to know all the guys that made these perfumes. Whilst people are all out here water boarding you with content about mass produced improbably cheap gaudy inspos, do take a moment to consider the micro brands. Those trying to create something new. Here’s 4 I have the honour of knowing personally.

When Viking first came out I was super unimpressed. It seemed like such a trivial peppery thing. But as time went on I grew to appreciate it more. Yes it’s peppery but also has a cool minty aspect and a chunky cedar base. Yeah there’s loads of other notes listed but let’s be honest it’s mostly mint and pepper. And that’s ok. I like it. In fact I like it a lot. Which itself is odd given I’m seldom a massive fan of pink pepper.

Anyway. There’s my assessment. I like it.

Magnetic Monaco was one I tried at the fragrance expo thing in London. Niche show? Something like that.

Anyway. I enjoyed this. It’s a bit of a chameleon. It smells like a few things twisted together but somehow none of them. I’ve worn this a few times now and on one occasion I felt it was a marine aquatic. On another it smelled like BR540 and then again it’s fruity and floral. It’s a lot. And it’s easy to like. It performs well and isn’t mad priced.

If I had a criticism it would be that I remain unable to pin it down. But I guess that’s also a positive. Boring would be - well - er - boring? And this is not that.

Recently bought Philosohers Veil. It’s a mostly herbaceous mossy fougere with a dark sort of twist in the base. The opening is clean and herbal floral - feeling bright and quite designery - but the depth in the base is very different - it’s both dark almost tarry woods but also quite sweet and vanillic. It’s a perfume you’d be forgiven for assuming was quite simplistic from the outset but as it develops it shines.

Very very durable too.

I don’t know a lot of BDK fragrances. I’m not super familiar with the original velvet tonka so I’m not going to be able to give you comparison notes. But I can tell you this smells like a pistachio pastry. It’s definitely sweet. Not quite diabetic coma sweet but pushing in that direction. It’s very dense and velvety in texture so I guess the brief was well observed. It has a warm leathery base that stops it going full on gourmand and lends it a supple heft.

It lasts and lasts - which is impressive. Overall I’d say this isn’t really my favourite style of perfume in that it’s very gourmand quite vanilla heavy - But it’s very nicely done and certainly captures that oh so vogue pistachio aspect fantastically. For foodie fans it’ll be a must try

A selection of new things I should like to tell you about once I develop the energy. Not to spoil anything but that is absolutely immense.

And yes. That’s a vintage (I use the term vintage advisedly - to be honest I remember buying it for my brother in law about 15 years ago for less than £15 - but here I had to shell out quite a lot more)
