This is probably one of our most misunderstood policies, so here's why.
First and foremost, this isn't about being difficult, and it's certainly not because we don't want children to join us. If there were a way to do it safely and fairly, we absolutely would.
Our baking clubs are designed for children to work in pairs, sharing ingredients, equipment and the baking experience together. If we change the ingredients for one child, it also changes the experience for their partner, who has signed up expecting to make the original recipe.
More importantly, it's about safety.
Take gluten-free baking as an example. Even if we provided gluten-free flour, the room is still full of children using regular flour. Flour becomes airborne far more than people realise, creating a real risk of cross-contamination. That means we couldn't confidently say the finished bake is safe for a child with a gluten allergy.
Our priority will always be keeping every child safe. We'd much rather be honest about what we can safely provide than take a risk with a child's health.
We would love to one day be able to offer dedicated gluten-free, dairy-free or other specialist baking clubs, where the entire environment is designed to be safe for those children. We think that would be amazing.
Until then, this policy isn't about saying "no"—it's about putting children's safety first.
