Bread Ahead’s Future Bakers Project is a long-term initiative with an ambitious goal: to teach one million children and young adults to bake over the next decade. We’ve been working on this for the past year.
The project treats baking as a practical form of education. By learning to measure ingredients, prepare dough and follow a process from start to finish, young people gain useful kitchen skills and a greater understanding of the food they eat. Making something with their own hands also gives them opportunities to practise patience, solve problems and build confidence.
Future Bakers offers sessions led by Bread Ahead’s expert bakers at its Borough Market and Wembley bakery schools. Eligible schools can access these sessions free of charge. A free online video library allows young people to learn at home or at school, wherever they are.
At its heart, the project brings education and community together through the shared experience of baking. Its commitment to free access reflects a spirit of charity: opening up opportunities for young people who might otherwise face barriers to learning.
Through practical teaching and accessible resources, Future Bakers aims to give the next generation skills they can use and share throughout their lives.
