Some of us naturally have Vata as our primary dosha, while many others develop Vata imbalance through the stress and pace of modern life — irregular routines, overstimulation, too much movement and not enough rest. Ayurveda also teaches that as we age, we naturally enter a more Vata stage of life, making warm, nourishing and grounding foods even more important. While we are all living through this huge protein craze at the moment, I think we’ve forgotten something important.

Protein metabolism actually creates a lot of oxidative stress and free radicals in the body, especially when eaten in excess or under chronic stress. Meanwhile, nourishing carbohydrates are much gentler from that perspective and are deeply supportive for the nervous system, hormones, vitality, and longevity.
