How do you incentivise Google reviews?

Someone who runs a cafe further down the road came by recently for a coffee and a chat. They mentioned that Brewsmiths comes highly recommended on Google and asked me this question.

I was genuinely a little surprised, because the answer is definitely we don’t.

We’ve never offered a discount, free coffee or anything else in exchange for a review. In fact, we don’t even ask customers to leave one. There’s simply a little QR code near the till for anyone who wants to share their experience.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking happy customers for a review, plenty of great businesses do it. We just never really made it part of our routine.

And yet, less than 9 months after opening, 208 people have taken the time to review Brewsmiths, and we’re sitting at 5.0 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

That means a lot to us, a lot more than I can explain.

Our approach has been pretty simple make coffee that we’re proud to serve, look after people properly, and hope the rest takes care of itself. Apparently, it does

To every single person who has left us a review, thank you so much. We notice them, we read them, and we appreciate every one 🤎

A little note to fellow baristas, make the coffee good, provide service people remember, and make every customer leave feeling a little happier than when they arrived. When the experience is genuinely worth talking about, people want to leave a review and you don’t have to chase them for one 😇

WHY DIY? PART 1

When I finally decided to leave my job and build something of my own, the first thing I did wasn’t look for a location. I looked at the “economics”and the numbers weren’t particularly encouraging.

Before you’ve sold a single flat white, a conventional coffee shop can already require serious money for the lease, fit-out, equipment, furniture, utilities and staffing.

I simply didn’t have that kind of capital to gamble on an idea that hadn’t even been proven yet.

So I started looking for another way. At the time, I was seeing Professional Idiots on Instagram converting double-decker bus into coffee bus, and I became slightly obsessed with the idea.

It made sense in my head: coffee downstairs, seating upstairs. An actual cafe experience without taking on a conventional shop.

I started looking seriously into doing something similar and eventually met Luke, who now runs The Moving Mug The Moving Mug

We talked through the practical side of operating something that size, and he explained how significant the maintenance and running costs could become.

Once I actually looked at the numbers, the romantic idea of a double-decker coffee bus started looking a lot less romantic.

It was going to cost considerably more than the other ideas I was considering.

So the bus was out.

Then I started looking at professionally built bespoke coffee trailers. Beautiful. But again…expensive…very expensive.

And that was when the question completely changed.

Instead of asking:

“What would my dream coffee shop look like?”

I started asking:

“What is the least amount of money I can spend to find out whether people actually want my coffee?”

WHY DIY? PART 2

That question eventually took me somewhere considerably less glamorous > Facebook Marketplace 🫣

One day, a listing appeared for a converted coffee trailer being sold by Butter Up Coffee Butter Up Coffee

I messaged them almost immediately, went and I met Jamil, and realised it already had most of the fundamentals I needed.

It wasn’t my finished vision but the bones were there. So I bought it. Jamil helped me massively with understanding the trailer and answering all the questions I had (thank you so much

LATTE ART GETS THE ATTENTION BUT ESPRESSO EARNS IT

A beautiful pattern may make you stop and look.
But it cannot rescue a bad espresso. I’ve worked with cafes where the routine never changed grind, tamp, lock in and press the button. The grinder setting stayed untouched for weeks despite changes in the beans, temperature and humidity.

Espresso is not “set it and forget it.”

Beans age. Conditions change. Extraction changes. That is why espresso must be tasted, measured and dialled in regularly.

Perfectly textured milk and beautiful latte art matter but they should finish the coffee, not hide what is underneath.
