Overdale holiday cottage

Website

Overdale holiday cottage Overdale is a self catering cottage sleeping up to 6 with stunning views over Wensleydale. Overdale is a 16th century dales cottage in Wensleydale near Hawes.

It sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms. It is comfortably furnished and has many additional features over and above the average self catering cottage - as an example, there are maps and guide books a plenty and there is a huge range of toys and children's books, as well as lots of games and books for all ages. It is located in an idyllic position with great walks right from the door. The views from the cottage are breath taking. Overdale is an ideal base for an active holiday or somewhere simply to relax. There are plenty of interesting places to visit - both for adults and children. We (the owners) use the cottage ourselves quite regularly but we offer it - at reasonable rates - to other families, to help pay for its upkeep! Loads of other facilities - garden, bike storage etc - send a message for further info

The name Langstrothdale comes from Old English and is generally translated as "long marsh" or "marshy ground", suggesting that early settlers saw the valley as a wet, boggy landscape shaped by the upper reaches of the River Wharfe.

A 19th century bridge connecting Middleham and Leyburn will reopen ahead of schedule after work was carried out following a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle.

Our bridges team has dismantled and removed a damaged arch on Middleham Bridge, which crosses the River Ure.

The works to the Grade II listed bridge, which had been closed since 3 September, are estimated to cost £40,000. It will reopen to traffic later today (Friday 2 October).

History has shown we should be very wary of the words ‘sitcom about walking’ – but surely a cast of this calibre must give us some optimism?

Mark Bonnar and Ashley Jensen are teaming up for Rambling, an ‘enchanting, warm and witty’ one-off 30-minute BBC sitcom about a mismatched pair wandering the ‘breathtaking scenery of rural Scotland’.

The synopsis tells us:

"You’d never put Gerry and Cat together. He’s order, she’s chaos. Gerry plans every step. Cat gets lost on the way to the car park.

"Gerry’s on a mission to fulfil a promise to his recently deceased brother. Cat’s flying solo having been thrown out a walking group that was supposed to be a fresh start for her.

"The more they walk and talk, they discover they’re travelling on common ground. Rambling is a feel-good Scottish sitcom all about putting your best foot forward."

Does it sound like something you’ve heard/seen/read many times before? Or does the cast and the premise sound too good to ignore?

And does it also sound eerily similar to the premise of David Nicholls’ book You Are Here – which is itself being turned into a BBC adaptation next year, with Claire Foy and Matthew MacFadyen?

Anyway: no official date for Rambling yet, but we’ll keep you informed... 🤞🤞

Shaws Lane - our daily morning dog walk - provided us with some great views of cows and beyond. When we were back at Overdale, our sheep neighbours had staged a sit down demonstration as they like to be the main attraction!
