21.May.26 Coconut Macaroons
أقراص جوز الهند أو لوزيّة
Chewy and rich on the inside, crisp and golden on the outside, they are delicious plain but even more irresistible in this Syrian recipe where Apricot jam is incorporated in the mixture.
Unlike Western versions, Syrian recipes often highlight rose water, orange blossom water, or citrus zest to provide a distinct floral flavor profile.
Often served at celebratory events like weddings

18.May.26 Kohlrabi (Shelbato) شلباطو
Warm and Comforting. This is a traditional Damascene Winter dish made with Kohlrabi (A cross between turnip and cabbage). Crunchy, juicy and slightly peppery, becomes sweeter and milder when cooked, (normally with rice), taking on a texture similar to potatoes or turnip.
Syrians call it Shelbato which literally translates to “Paralysed His Armpit” because it’s hard to peel and by the end when you’re finished peeling, your arm pit hurts.
Best served with cucumber yogurt salad to balance the meat richness.

9.May.26 Tamarind Drink شراب تمر هندي
Tamarind drink, known locally as Tamr Hindi (تمر هندي), is a traditional, iconic sweet-and-tangy beverage in Damascus, particularly popular during summer and Ramadan. It is sold by street vendors in the old city, notably in Hamidiyah Souq, who carry large, often ornate brass containers and use a dramatic, low-bending pouring technique.

Made from the sticky brown pulp of tamarind pods, it is mixed with sugar, water, and sometimes rose water. The resulting juice is dark, thick, and highly refreshing.

The profession of selling this drink is hundreds of years old in Damascus. Vendors often wear traditional, colorful attire and sing folklore songs while serving.
