Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard this week to serve our community. We’re so proud of the team and all that you do! 👏🏼

📅 A quick reminder: the café will be closed tomorrow (Friday 28th August) and Saturday 29th August.

With Monday being a bank holiday, we’ll reopen on Tuesday 1st September.

I’m sure many of you are enjoying the cooler weather, although I’ll be hanging on to the last of the summer warmth for as long as possible! 😊

🎂 Happy Birthday!
Our recent birthday celebrations go to Ben, Nick and Gordon! Happiest of birthdays, guys — we hope you all had a wonderful time celebrating! 🥳🎉

🔥 Fire safety training
Mark, Sophie and Erlin were on shift when we had an unannounced fire evacuation drill. We were incredibly proud of how calmly and safely everyone managed the evacuation. It also gave us a great opportunity to revisit our fire training and, importantly, the role of our sign-on sheet, which is used as our attendance register during an evacuation.

🫙 Can and bottle tops for charity
Did you know that the café collects can and bottle tops for a local charity? If you enjoy canned drinks at home and would like to bring in your bottle tops, I’d be very happy to pass them on to a worthy cause. ❤️

🍽️ Allergy & intolerance awareness
We have now introduced a special ordering form for guests with food allergies or intolerances. Every order where an allergy is involved will be completed using this specific form.

Please always make us aware of any allergies or dietary requirements each time you visit, rather than assuming we will remember. Ingredients can change in our kitchen and with our suppliers, so we need to check every order at every visit to help keep you safe. ❤️

📅 Important café & group chat dates

The café will be closed on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th August.

As Monday 31st August is a public holiday, café service will resume on Tuesday 1st September.

Our usual Friday Chat About group (which is hosted by Farnborough Library - Hampshire County Council) every Friday from 10-11am will also take place on Thursday 27th August in the café instead due to the closure over the long bank holiday weekend.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding! ☕️❤️

Our wonderful local FAB Café supporter, Joyce Warrell, has published her very own book of poetry — We All In The Same Boat: 150 Poems for Perky Pensioners. ❤️

Joyce’s poems are wonderful, and we’re delighted to have a few copies of her book available at the café on consignment for anyone who would like to take a look or purchase a copy.

We’ve had lots happening at the café recently, so here’s a little round-up of our latest news!

🤝 A warm welcome to our new volunteers, Souzan and Elaine! We’re delighted to have you join our team. If you see a new face around the café, please do say hello and introduce yourself—we know you’ll make them feel right at home.

😊 Talking of new faces… while we’ve been waiting for some new trainees to start, we’ve been lucky enough to welcome back some familiar ones! A huge thank you to our former trainees Stacey, Ryan and Shannon, who have been helping out as bank staff. It’s been wonderful to have you back with us!

🎉 Happy Birthday, Sophie! We hope you had a fantastic day celebrating yesterday! 🥳🎂

🎓 Congratulations to Sterling, who graduated from the café this past week after completing his 12-month training programme! We’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved through your dedication and hard work over the last year. We wish you every success in your next adventure! 👏🏼

👨‍🍳 On Tuesday, Alex, Sophie, Jack, Ellie and Zander attended our bespoke MCG Food Foundation training. It was an amazing opportunity, and we’re incredibly grateful to our local sponsors, BakerLaw LLP, for making it possible.

A special shout-out also goes to June, who supported everyone throughout the day, ensuring each trainee had the encouragement and assistance they needed to get the very best from the training. Thank you, June! ❤️

🌟 A Look Back at Our Week 🌟

It’s been another busy and productive week at the café!

One of our main training topics is allergy awareness. This is such an important topic, and our trainees have been learning about what an allergy is and why it’s important to take it seriously. Ensuring everyone can enjoy their visit with confidence is something we take very seriously.

🍽️ A gentle reminder to all our wonderful guests: If you have any allergies or food intolerances, please let us know every time you place an order. Even if you’re a regular customer and we know you well, we ask that you remind us each visit so we never make assumptions. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe.

🤟 This week, Ellie has also been teaching us some Makaton – a fantastic communication tool that helps people communicate using signs and symbols along with speech. With the weather we’ve been having, we definitely all learned how to sign “hot!” ☀️😅 Thank you, Ellie, for sharing your knowledge with us!

☕ And finally… we’ve added something delicious to the menu! Why not cool down with our NEW Mint Mocha Iced Latte? It’s the perfect refreshing treat for these warm summer days. Pop in and give it a try – we’d love to hear what you think!

☀️ So Summer has arrived, and so have our new Ice cream sundaes 🍨

Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundaes have been popular – the perfect way to kick off the summer!

Choose from strawberry, vanilla, or chocolate ice cream, then make it your own with your favourite sauces and toppings, including oreo, biscoff , fresh berries, flake, and waffers. The combinations are endless, and they’re proving to be a hit!

At the café, every trainee follows their own individual training programme, learning new skills and building confidence at a pace that’s right for them.

This week, Zander has been developing his safe cutting skills, practising food preparation and order taking!

Why not pop in, treat yourself to a waffle or create your own dream sundae, and see all the fantastic work our trainees are doing? We can’t wait to welcome you! 🍓🍫🍨❤️

Today we celebrated the completion of Katie’s work experience with us! 👏

Katie has been a valued member of our Saturday team, holding the Saturday shift right through until the end of May before handing the opportunity over to her friend, Ellie.

Today was extra special as Katie received her work experience certificate… and it was also her birthday! 🎂🥳

Happy Birthday, Katie! We hope you’ve had a fantastic day celebrating!

We are all so proud of how much you’ve grown over the last year. Your confidence has blossomed, your skills have developed tremendously, and it’s been a pleasure to watch your journey. You’ve been a wonderful part of our café team, and we know you’ll continue to achieve great things!

🌟 Café Update – The Last Couple of Weeks 🌟

It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks here at the café, and we’d love to share some of our highlights with you!

🎂 Firstly, we’d like to wish a very Happy Birthday to Alex, Zoe, and Mark! We hope you all had wonderful celebrations and enjoyed your special days.

👋 We’ve recently welcomed Ellie to the team on Saturday mornings as she begins her 12-month training programme with us. We’re excited to have her on board and look forward to working together over the coming year. Please join us in making her feel welcome as she settles in.

📚 We’d also like to welcome Tea’, who is joining us from Farmborough College as a work experience student. Tea’ will be with us for another week, and we’re delighted to be supporting her learning and development.

🎢 Finally, our team recently enjoyed a fantastic day out at Chessington World of Adventures! It was wonderful to spend quality time together away from the café, and everyone had a great day making memories, sharing laughs, and enjoying the rides. Big thank you to our wonderful volunteers who helped on the day both at Chessington and those running the cafe in our absence!
