Another in the short series of what we find at New Lodge Farm in Autumn What about this beauty from our visiting Fallow Deer population? ( we know its a fallow deer from the antlers shape, Fallow are the only deer other than moose to grow palmate /hand shaped Antlers ) Incredibly they grow these impressive structures each year
Used as weapons when duelling for the ladies ,and for marking territory in the rutting season, They are painlessly shed in the Autumn to allow easier living in the cold winter months They are then used to decorate our Farm Shop or handed to our local stick maker to produce a fine handled country accessory

Last weekend we hosted the "Rockers" a charming bunch of chaps who had two good rideouts from the Farm on their beautiful british bikes .This weekend coming its the turn of the" Mods" with a return visit from the Awfully Pleasant Scooter Association here for Breakfast on Saturday , Riding out on their equally beautiful Lambrettas and Vespas then returning 3.30pm and hopefully joining us for Early Pizza ( I did hear a suggestion that perhaps next year we ought to combine both rallies on the same day and move it to Skegness beach on the August Bank Holiday and pretend its 1965 all over again) 🤣🤣

Another Autumn sign, If the soil moisture and warmth are both correct , you might see a proliferation of field mushrooms .Always make sure that you know what you are picking. 1 Pick mushrooms from open land. 2 Pick the stem to check they come from the soil ( and not from an "egg sack" as these could be poisonous ) 3 Check the gills are dusky pink to the more mature black colour 4 Scratch the top of the mushroom if it stains yellow dont eat it
Look out for the "Fairy Rings" Circles in the grass where European folklore has it, that Elves and Fairies dance together at night
If ever you begin to see Elves and Fairies dancing together at night ,you have probably consumed the wrong kind of mushroom .........Get someone to take you to A and E pronto !

Another sign that Autumn is here ( but this Item won't
be making our restaurant table any time soon ) are the dusk and dawn flights of thousands of Canada Geese. In good weather they fly incredibly low 'like the 617 squadron down the Ruhr Valley East to West in the evening, and the reverse in the morning, Tried to cook one once ,
Took 10 hours to cook . Tough as shoe leather ......and tasted of Fish ! It went straight in the Bin !

Time to start "Farming the unfarmed " Blackberry picking is always one of the favorite times for our fairly useless ,but loveable, German Shepherd guardog Nellie. Blackberries to be used in our crumbles in the restaurant this autumn Sloes will be picked to make some more New Lodge Farm Sloe Gin . There is a huge crop of hedgerow fruits this year, which my Grandad would have said was a portent to a hard winter to come ....you heard it here first !

After the little anniversary card stunt two weeks ago , a few people started jumping around . Thanks to all who helped get this matter concluded by showing your support It proves that we can make a difference if we all take a stance

So apparently all you need is a 370 horsepower tractor , pulling a Horsch Joker Cultivator and operated by your Godson Freddie, to do something in a day that would have taken me a week ! Called in the big guns to help with a speedy preperation and drilling of a new Lucerne crop now the rain has finally arrived
