The Story Behind TeGwen
Many people ask us: "Who is Tegwen? Is there a Gwen?"
I’m Iona, the owner of this little cafe, and my dream has always been to open a traditional tea room. When we spotted this beautiful building for sale, we instantly saw its potential. Turning that dream into reality became a true family project. With my vision, my husband Huw by my side, my daughter Ffion handling the paperwork, and my son Chris bringing the space to life with his skilled friends, we built this place together.
Then came the question of what to name it.
I was blessed with a wonderful mum who was always my biggest cheerleader. Her name was Tegwen Mefus. Sadly, she passed away before meeting my daughter, whom I named Tegwen Ffion. The legacy continued when Ffion had her own little girl and named her Tegwen Haf.
With three generations of incredible women sharing the name, TeGwen was the perfect choice. It is also a playful nod to what we do: "Te" for the tea we serve, and "Gwen" to bring the name together.
We also added Gegin Fach Y Dre to our name to honour our roots. Many of our customers are already familiar faces from our catering journey. Back in 1992, Huw and I started Gegin Fach Y Wlad with just a single catering van. Now, 34 years later, we are proud caterers at the Carmarthen and Whitland livestock markets, Cartref Cynnes, and continue to provide outside catering.
I am incredibly lucky to have a team of loyal friends whom I am proud to call my employees. I am so grateful to every single one of them, and to you, our wonderful customers, for your ongoing support. Welcome to TeGwen!
