Lizzy is the winner of August’s Dog of the Month competition, and boy oh boy is she a popular pooch!

We totted up the votes from both Instagram and Facebook and Lizzy won by a landslide – for winning she’ll receive an extra special treat based on her dietary requirements and her human will get a free hot beverage. Of course, we think ALL of the entrants are pawfect – but someone’s gotta win!

IT’S BOVEY FESTIVAL THIS SATURDAY!

Make sure to wear trousers with an elasticated waistband as Bovey high street will be packed full of delicious food and drink concessions for all tastes.

We are, of course, open our usual Saturday hours (10am-5pm), so if you fancy a bloody good cup@of coffee, or something you can’t get at the festival (like 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙮 the best carrot cake in the world), or simply eating lunch inside and under cover, then make sure to swing on by!

If you are a giant deep-sea tube worm and have no interest in consuming food, Bovey Festival is worth the trip anyway! There’ll be plenty of local craft stalls and musical performances throughout the day. Indulge in a bit of culture and visit the exhibitions on display in our building buddy, MAKE Southwest’s, galleries - this Saturday is the last day to catch ‘In Praise of Small things’ 😱. Or encourage the kids try their hand at something creative and drop by the FREE, self-guided craft activity in the Discover Making Area of the Jubilee Gallery!

Reminder – this may be good for a laugh but it is also good for the soul… in order to take part, each entrant donated at least £1 to the magnificent animal charity to help them rescue, rehabilitate and rehome guinea pigs, rabbits, cats and dogs!

Read a little more about each dog:

1. Lizzy: refuses to wear her glasses out in public as she thinks they make her “look old”. She is, however, perfectly happy to whizz around on her mobility scooter whilst badmouthing the young couple next door for listening to music past 8pm and not bringing their emptied recycling bins inside in a timely manner.

2. Pippin: the Rhodesian Ridgeback originates from South Africa and is famed for its courage, exceling at tracking large game and hunting lions. Following in her ancestor’s footsteps, Pippin has already taken down one cheese scone and can trace her way to the butcher’s from any starting location.

3. Lincoln: is a creature of habit, he likes to start his mornings by destroying the newspaper as soon as it comes through the letterbox. His humans thought they were being clever by switching their Times subscription online. They changed their mind after Lincoln shredded the third iPad.

4. Cosmo: in Cosmo’s downtime he is writing a paper on Brane Cosmology: A string-theory model in which our universe is a 3D “brane” in higher-dimensional space, with collisions potentially triggering Big Bangs. In Cosmo’s uptime, he likes to clear out a room with his farts.

One of our wonderful regulars has entered us into the Dog Friendly Awards in the cafe category! Help us win the accolade by voting via the DogFriendly website by 11th October.

As a team of dog lovers, we work hard to make our cafe super dog friendly and our Dog of the Month competition and the house plants we sell all raise money for Animals in Distress in Ipplepen. If you agree that Rodney’s is a great, dog friendly cafe, why not chuck us a vote!

Yes, it’s that time again… time to get voting for your favourite pooch for July’s 🦴 It looks like the mega heat has gotten to everyone, there’s only 2 in the running this month! It’s a full on head to head - safe to say, we’re glad we’re not you!

We’ve been having great fun spotting all the dogs in Molly Lemon’s beautiful solo show in MAKE Southwest’s Print Room 😍

Molly is a printmaker by trade but a hand injury meant she needed to temporarily find a new creative output - she chose collage. In 2025 she set herself a challenge to make a collage a day for the entire year. This exhibition showcases that output, and it is STUNNING!

There are so many gorgeous miniature scenes to digest - made by layering her own print off cuts into tiny landscapes, it is quite magical how the viewer is transported into the setting: snuggled in the lounge with a cup of tea and a jigsaw puzzle, sitting by a pond feeding ducks, splodging through puddles in the countryside, meeting friends for a delicious slice of cake.

Speaking of meeting friends for a delicious slice cake… 😉 once you are finished finding all the little joyful moments, pop upstairs for a cuppa and something sweet - open 10am-5pm.

‼️VAT is killing hospitality‼️ You may have noticed in your feed, or even seen boarded up store fronts in small high streets, a large number of hospitality businesses having to close their doors.

We know it’s tough out there for everyone, money is tight and the cost of living keeps on increasing, but VAT has become a killer for hospitality, especially small independent businesses and it is having a direct impact on cafe/pub/restaurant closures up and down the UK.

The hospitality industry has come together, spearheaded by to call on the government to reduce hospitality VAT from 20% to 10%. This reduction would make a huge difference, keeping people in employment, supporting livelihoods and keeping local high streets vibrant.

The hospitality industry not only employs millions of people and gives us a place to socialise, it can provide a way of accessibly sharing culture in a country that can feel scarily divided, and makes space for human interaction in an increasingly digitally-dependant world.
