📢 UPDATE - BLYTH PROMENADE 📢
Unfortunately, the railing manufacturers have informed Northumberland County Council that there will be a 3-week delay on the first batch being delivered to the works to Blyth Prom. This pushes the start back to mid-October. The 12 weeks planned programme remains in place.

📢 BLYTH PROMENADE – FORTHCOMING WORKS

Please note this is a Northumberland County Council project.

Residents and promenade users are advised that works at Blyth Promenade will commence on Monday 28 September 2026.

The works will be carried out by Northumberland County Council Highways Department and will involve two key areas:

🔹 South Promenade – Sheet Pile Wall Remedial Works

Remedial works will begin at the southern end of the promenade to repair the existing sheet pile wall. The works are intended to address the condition of the wall and help ensure the continued safety and integrity of the promenade frontage.

🔹 North Promenade – New Safety Railings

At the same time, installation of new metal safety railings will begin at the northern end of the promenade.

The railings will extend from the bandstand area, past the beach huts, and through to the end of the promenade.

The installation is being undertaken as a public safety measure, helping to reduce the risk of falls from the promenade edge onto the adjacent beach and foreshore.

📅 Timescale

The works will be carried out progressively, with the programme and duration dependent on site conditions and the nature of the remedial works.

The current estimated timeframe is approximately 12 weeks.

Further updates will be provided if there are any significant changes to the programme.

⚠️ Temporary disruption

It is appreciated that these works may cause some temporary disruption to residents and promenade users. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption while maintaining public safety throughout the works.

The weather might be changing but our room with a view is still warm and open 7 days a week to enjoy the best views in Blyth.

We've changed to winter opening times so the kiosk is open until 4pm and the toilets and beach huts will be closed at 6pm

'As residents and visitors enjoy our beach today, I hope we can spare a moment to remember the young men whose lives were lost here on 24 August 1917.'

Today marks 109 years since one of the darkest tragedies in Blyth’s history.

On 24 August 1917, during the First World War, more than 600 soldiers of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment were on a route march from their training camp when they stopped at Blyth Beach. Many of the young soldiers had never seen the sea before, and some could not swim. They were allowed into the water to cool off, unaware of the powerful currents running along the beach on the ebbing tide.

When several men got into difficulty, their comrades immediately went to their aid. Soldiers formed human chains in an attempt to rescue them. Tragically, nine young soldiers lost their lives that day. The tragedy remains commemorated today at the Dave Stephens Centre, where a memorial plaque records the nine soldiers who drowned near Blyth Beach. A service and plaque dedication were held there on the centenary in 2017.

109 years later, we remember them.

Nine young men who came to Blyth during wartime and never returned home.

As residents and visitors enjoy our beach today, I hope we can spare a moment to remember the young men whose lives were lost here on 24 August 1917.

Updated advice on Blyth Beach use following the news the other day.

Surf School is still open for lessons and hire. Please continue to enjoy the sunshine on our beautiful beach and use the local businesses.

🏄 Supporting Blyth South Beach Surf School

Following the ongoing pollution investigation I have met with South Beach Surf School, to discuss the very real impact this situation is having on the business.

The surf school has already experienced cancellations at what should be one of its busiest times of year. I think it is important that, while we rightly put public safety first, we also do everything we reasonably can to support local businesses that are being affected through no fault of their own.

During my meeting with the Environment Agency, the advice was that the contamination is concentrated around the Hole in the Wall area of Blyth Beach. With that in mind, we discussed whether lessons could potentially continue further along the beach, towards the Blyth Battery end, between the groynes and away from the affected area.

If lessons can be safely relocated to an unaffected section of the beach, I think it would be a positive way of allowing the surf school to continue trading and providing activities for visitors during the remainder of the summer holidays.

We don’t want the current situation to unnecessarily result in the loss of an entire summer season for a local business if there is a safe alternative available.

So if you have a lesson booked with Blyth South Beach Surf School or were thinking of using their equipment, then please be advised that they are still here and will be conducting lessons further down the beach, away from the affected area located at the hole in the wall.

I’ll continue to work with the surf school, the Environment Agency and the Council as we continue to asses the impact this incident has had.
