Tommy and his wife Chloe found out earlier this year that their three-year-old son Rio had stage four cancer. They were told he had a large tumour on his kidney & that the cancer had spread to his lungs. Little Rio is battling hard to overcome his illness…he’s had weeks of chemotherapy & a four hour surgery to remove the main tumour & his right kidney.
This month the family had the pathology results of the tumour they removed. It was not the news they were hoping for or expecting. The histology is unfavourable & high risk (only a tiny percentage of all Wilms tumours fall into this category) It means that it is still treatable but Rio’s will go through at least another 9 months of treatment & his chemotherapy is going to be much more intense from now on. He’ll have radiotherapy to his lungs too. Devastatingly, it mean his chances of surviving this have decreased. He has started his new chemo & we are told he is handling it like an absolute superstar as always.
Tommy and Chloe have had to significantly reduce their working hours to manage caring for Rio and his younger brother Rudy around time spent at Royal Manchester children’s hospital where Rio is being treated. We felt the family might need additional support during this difficult time so that they can concentrate on looking after Rio and Rudy.
Statement from Tommy & Chloe….
“We have had a lengthy & difficult conversation with our incredible consultant. He is always honest & realistic with us which is absolutely what we ask for. He was pleased to hear about the sensational fundraising efforts from so many kind people who care so much about Rio & our family. He also explained that when families are able to raise a lot of money it is an important thing to remember; we don’t know where this journey will take us. There’s no crystal ball to predict it. And no promise that when Rio rings the bell at the end of his treatment that he is cured for good.
The ‘high risk’ features as well as lung metastasis make Rio’s cancer more likely to return.
If the cancer comes back (most commonly Wilms tumours relapse in the first 12 months after completing treatment) we won’t have lots of options for further treatment for Rio….as he will already have had a lot of the strong chemotherapy drugs his body can take - plus radiotherapy. We pray to God this will never happen but if it does, our consultant explained that a pot of fundraising money is an excellent way of potentially paying for further treatment available in other countries. Something we hadn’t thought about before.
The money raised so far is nothing short of gob smacking. Tom & I are SO touched by everyones generosity. Totally & utterly blown away. Family, friends & strangers have shown us so much kindness ❤️ We really do appreciate it a lot."
