Police Federation of England and Wales
No officer should face misconduct proceedings without continuous welfare support.
That was the powerful message from Police Federation Equality Lead Hayley Aley at the Police Superintendents' Association Annual Conference.
Of the officer su***de cases known to Federation welfare networks, more than half involved officers facing misconduct investigations, Professional Standards Department processes, criminal investigations, suspensions or workplace restrictions.
📊 Between 2022 and 2025, 47 of 75 recorded officer su***des involved officers who were under investigation.
📊 In 2026 so far, every officer su***de reported to Federation welfare networks, 13 in total, involved an officer who was under investigation.
“For many officers, the investigation becomes the punishment,” said Hayley. “We have seen careers, confidence and family life eroded by years of uncertainty, with lasting consequences for health and wellbeing.”
While most forces now have welfare or risk assessment processes in place, provision remains inconsistent. The Federation is calling for national standards that guarantee continuous welfare and risk assessments from day one of an investigation through to its conclusion and beyond.
Behind every statistic is a colleague, a family and a life changed forever.
