🖤 The Cathedral of Borrowed Hands | A Shadow Study at Carré Sainte-Anne.
Shadows are gloriously indifferent to their owners.
Long before the tree comes into view, its hands have already taken possession of the cathedral. They drift across worn stone, climb the columns, and mingle with fragments of stained glass light as though they have quietly rewritten the architecture for the afternoon.
The tree itself can wait.
This film follows the shadows first, tracing painted roots across the floor before finally looking up to reveal JR’s Adventice, the monumental installation suspended inside Carré Sainte-Anne in Montpellier. Then the eye wanders back to the silhouettes, because they seem far less interested in behaving than the sculpture that created them.
Perhaps that is the privilege of shadows. They are under no obligation to remain still.
The organ watches in silence. The vaulted ceiling disappears beneath a forest of suspended hands. Yet it is the shifting silhouettes below that refuse to let the eye settle.
The installation was remarkable.
Its shadows are irresistible.
* This installation at Carre Saint Anne ended in winter 2026 . This is a shadow study of what was there
