THINKING ABOUT BUYING A HOME IN SPAIN?

Before you disappear down the Idealista rabbit hole… STOP!
We get it. You’ve found the house.

It has the terrace.
It has the pool.
It has the views.
And obviously… it has the obligatory lemon tree

You’re already mentally living there. But then comes the slightly less exciting question…Can you actually afford it?

And this is where things get interesting because Spain doesn’t have one property market.

What you need to earn to buy a home in Madrid or Barcelona can be VERY different from what you need in other parts of Spain.

And even within the same region, prices can change dramatically depending on whether you’re looking at the coast, a popular tourist area, a town or a smaller inland village.

So when someone tells us:

“I want to buy in Spain.”
Our next question usually isn’t:
“What house do you want?”

It’s:

“What sort of life do you want?”
Do you need to be close to the beach?
Do you need an airport nearby?
Are you happy driving 20 or 30 minutes?
Do you need schools?
Would you consider a pueblo?
Would you rather have a bigger house and land further inland than a smaller property right on the coast?

Because sometimes the answer isn’t “I can’t afford Spain.”

It’s simply:

“I’m looking in the wrong place.”

And PLEASE remember there’s more to buying than the advertised property price.

You’ll need to think about your deposit, taxes, purchase costs and, depending on your circumstances, how much financing you can realistically obtain.

This is why we always say:

Start with the numbers. THEN start looking at houses.

Otherwise, you risk falling in love with the finca, pool and lemon tree… only to discover your budget had other ideas.

Mozzie Maggie at it again

Summer in Spain is wonderful... sunshine, long evenings, amazing food... and mosquitoes that seem to think you're an all-you-can-eat buffet. 🦟

This week we've been sharing the office with one particularly determined little freeloader who'd apparently decided our non-residential building made the perfect home. She wasn't paying rent, didn't contribute towards the coffee fund, and seemed far more interested in the staff than the clients.

After one too many completely uninvited snacks, we're afraid to report that her tenancy has now come to an abrupt end. We can confirm the eviction was swift, final, and unlikely to be overturned on appeal.

Her brief stay did get us talking about malaria and how it actually works.

A lot of people think mosquitoes create malaria, but they don't. It's actually caused by a tiny parasite that can live inside certain mosquitoes. If that mosquito is infected, it can pass the parasite on through its saliva when it bites. Strange, isn't it? Nature certainly has a weird sense of humour.

Thankfully, malaria isn't something people normally need to worry about from mosquitoes in Spain. The bites are usually just itchy, annoying, and always seem to happen in exactly the spot you can never stop scratching.

I know this isn't something that many people like to talk about, but recently it has been on my mind, so me being me, I started doing research and getting in touch with companies to see how things worked. Funeral cover. Yes there it is I have said it.
