Have you ever wondered how the families of abducted and enslaved migrants in Libya are extorted?

Thousands of dollars are extracted from desperate families through unimaginable brutality: torture, r**e, broken bones, shattered jaws, fractured skulls, burning, starvation, and, in some cases, even reports of people being skinned alive.

These abuses are often carried out in front of cameras and in the presence of other captives to instill fear, enforce obedience, and pressure families into paying ransoms.

In this footage, a young Eritrean man who fled oppression in Eritrea is being tortured while being filmed. At the same time, he is forced to speak to his family by phone and beg for money to secure his release. The video is intended to demonstrate the suffering he is enduring and to compel his relatives to pay the demanded ransom.

This is one of the many horrific realities faced by migrants who fall into the hands of traffickers and criminal networks along migration routes through Libya.
