Dee Dee & Johnny Ramone, 1984.

Here‘s Dee Dee and Johnny leaving their backstage room, ready to take the stage at Traxx in Detroit, December 15, 1984.

The Ramones had just released „Too Tough To Die“, their 10th anniversary album, labeled as „the return of the Ramones“ - after the three previous albums released in the 80s had received mixed reviews by critics and fans of the early releases.

„Too Tough To Die“ was the first Ramones album with Richie Ramone on drums. It was produced by their first drummer and founding member Tommy Ramone.

Here‘s the Ramones with Cheapies Records founder and owner Brian Jasson in Hamilton, Ontario, August 16, 1991. CJ happily holds Brian‘s daughter Mimi - now member of the „Witch Punk“ trio Dream Nails.

The Ramones were Jasson‘s favorite band. He saw them perform 47 times. In return the Ramones made sure to pay Cheapies a visit or do an instore whenever they got to play in Hamilton.

Brian Jasson opened his record store in 1980. Cheapies closed in 2020. Brian passed away June 11, 2025.

Here‘s Joey doing his moves at the Velvet Club in Rimini, Italy, October 1, 1994.

The Ramones at this point had already toured five different continents throughout 1994, and still weren’t done. About a month after this picture was taken, Johnny, Joey, CJ and Marky traveled to South America again, after their first visit in May 1994, this time including their first ever show in Uruguay!

Johnny Ramone, 1978.

Here‘s Johnny at Huxley‘s Neue Welt in West-Berlin, September 12, 1978.

This was the first time the Ramones played in Berlin, and Germany in general. It was also Dee Dee‘s return to old stomping grounds, after him and his family had moved to Forest Hills in 1966.

The Ramones returned to Berlin numerous times in the following years. In 1995, Dee Dee and the Ramones paid tribute to the city with „Born To Die In Berlin“, the last song of their final album „Adios Amigos“.

Joey Ramone & Hiawatha Bailey, 1984.

Here‘s Joey backstage at Traxx in Detroit, December 19, 1984 - talking to Hiawatha Bailey from The Cult Heroes, one of the first Hardcore bands, formed in Ann Arbor in 1978.

Hiawatha Bailey was famous for his soaring vocals and chaotic, theatrical live performances. Before fronting Cult Heroes, he lived in the Hill Street commune and was the only non-white member of John Sinclair’s radical countercultural White Panther Party. He was even incarcerated alongside members of the MC5.

Here‘s Joey with a 16 ounce Budweiser can in his Tokyo Hotel room, October 1988.

Joey stopped drinking alcohol a few months later, after he badly fractured his ankle under the influence. Photographer Bob Gruen remembers the incident:

„I was with Joey the night he had his last drink. We were at the bar at Wetlands, and my girlfriend said, ‘Let’s have some tequila.’ Since we were with Joey, the bartender came over and poured us all mega-sized shots of tequila. Joey picked up the glass and said, ‘I know I’m gonna regret this.’

The crowd was thrilled when Joey came onstage to join Raging Slab for their encore song, but startled when, coming off the stage, Joey slipped on the steps and hit the ground, twisting his ankle. A few hours later, stepping out of a cab at an after-hours joint, Joey said: I really hurt my ankle. I think it’s starting to swell up. At that point it was 4 a.m. Joey called Monte, who got out of bed to come and take him home. The Ramones’ tour had to be postponed because Joey had broken his ankle.

The next time I saw Joey, he said he decided not to drink anymore. As the years went on, I never saw Joey Ramone with another drink in his hand.“

Here‘s three of the four Ramones with Ed Kaz, a long-time crew member of The Uncle Floyd Show, a cult-classic New Jersey comedy/variety television program that aired on Channel 68.

Kaz worked on the show in the 1980s and has since become a dedicated archivist of its legacy. On his platforms, he frequently shares vintage behind-the-scenes photographs, bloopers, and memorabilia featuring Uncle Floyd and the various famous musicians and artists who visited the set.

On this 1982 visit to the Uncle Floyd Show the Ramones performed a playback version of „I Wanna Be Sedated“.
