♻️ News flash! ♻️

Through the LIFE-IP CYzero WASTE project, led by the Department of Environment and co-funded by the European Union, **Zero Food Waste Cyprus** has established its own on-site composting system under **Action C4: Prevention of Food Waste Production**. With six new compost bins, we’ve taken a major step toward closing the loop, ensuring that while edible food reaches people, non-edible produce is transformed into valuable compost rather than ending up in landfills. Supported by **Dr Panagiotis Dalias** from the Agricultural Research Institute, our team received specialised *training for trainers* to ensure the process meets environmental and practical standards. Through a series of workshops held between June and September 2025, core volunteers and market participants were trained in compost input preparation and decomposition monitoring — turning what was once waste into a resource that nourishes new growth. 🌱♻️

During our distributions, each beneficiary receives a number, which we call out in random order to ensure fair and smooth sharing of rescued fruits and vegetables.

We recently needed new numbers — and instead of printing more paper or plastic, we searched for an eco-friendly alternative. That’s when we partnered with our friends at 💚

This amazing volunteer-led group transforms plastic waste into useful items, giving discarded materials a second life. They generously designed and created our new numbers for free — and we couldn’t be more grateful! 🙏

Saturday Aftermarket action update - 5 April 2025

Spring veggies are in! - Let’s not let them go to waste! 🥕🫛

During Spring time there in naturally a higher number of fruits and vegetables at the farmers market. The unstable weather conditions affects them and they usually reach their end life faster.

We are there to collect those surplus fruits and vegetables so that they are not thrown away and instead redirected to those in need.

On Saturday 5 April 2025 we have collected 687kgs of edible fruits and vegetables and donated these to 75 people in need and their families. 🤗

We also composted 75kgs of inedible fruits and veggies. 🥒

Join us this Saturday!

🌍 Η Ώρα της Γης 2025 είναι εδώ !

👉Σας περιμένουμε όλες και όλους στην κεντρική εκδήλωση για την Ώρα της Γης που θα προγματοποιηθεί στην Πλατεία του Δημαρχείου Λευκωσίας το Σάββατο 22/03 στις 19:30.

👉 Στην εκδήλωση πέραν του συμβολικού σβησίματος των φώτων από τις 20:30 μέχρι τις 21:30 θα υπάρχει καλλιτεχνικό πρόγραμμα, παιδικές δραστηριότητες και περιβαλλοντικές οργανώσεις με τα δικά τους τραπεζάκια.

Photos from our first Saturday Aftermarket of 2025!

On 4 January 2025 our food rescue heroes gathered again to start the year right! During that day we saved 211kgs of fruits and vegetables which we donated to 46 people in need!

Looking forward to a year full of food rescuing, helping people in need and raising awareness on the detrimental effects of food waste to our planet! Will you join our journey?

December 2024 recap!! Oh what a great month it was! Filled with lots of fruits and vegetables saved, two successful donation days, excursions, our wonderful volunteers surprising us with a hand painted banner with our logo and overall fun times! We want to give a special thanks to everyone who volunteered for us, donated food and clothes to us and overall supported our little initiative in creating so much impact for our environment and people in need! Cheers to lots more giving in the new year! 🥳

On Saturday 23 November 2024, during our Saturday Aftermarket initiative we had the pleasure to teach some young minds about the benefits of volunteering!

Students from Morningside Montessori Elementary - Cyprus joined our action and helped with the food sorting and distribution!

We had so much fun teaching them about food wasting and its impact on the people and the environment. We think that the children also enjoyed spending their afternoon with us as even when it got dark they did not want to leave. ☺️

Let’s inspire the next generation to give back and make a difference! 🌍✨

We are proud to announce our third Annual Donation event!!

On Saturday 14 of December and 21st of December 2024 we will be collecting donations of all kinds! Here’s a list of items that will make a significant difference:

- **Non-perishable food items**
- **Clothing and shoes**
- **Toys and games for children**
- **Household items (kitchenware, blankets, etc.)**

How You Can Help

1. **Donate Items:** Bring your gently used or new items to the event. Every contribution counts! We can also arrange collection if you are unable to come to us!
2. **Volunteer:** We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with setup, organization, and distribution on the day of the event.
3. **Spread the Word:** Share this event with your friends and family! The more people who know, the more we can gather for those in need.
