Restoring Our Watershed - Asociación Nandamojo is working to protect our aquifers. In a region threatened by climate change, our watershed (the Nandamojo basin) has exceptionally good aquifers, and ROW's mission is to ensure that those aquifers remain strong in the future.

This is big news: today we launched a 30-acre reforestation project, our largest to date. The owner of Hacienda La Norma (home of Pura Aventura) has decided to restore a cattle pasture in an extremely important part of the watershed - gently-sloping foothills that drain directly into the floodplain where three rivers connect to form the Nandamojo (see map). This year we'll start by planting about 500 saplings and living stakes in the pasture, and over the next three years we'll plant thousands more. Restoring Our Watershed - Asociación Nandamojo is teaching Nandamojo watershed residents how to use many of the techniques that have been applied throughout our community to stabilize slopes and ensure rainwater recharges our aquifers instead of creating soil erosion.

In August, more than a dozen farmers from all over the watershed came together for our first water harvesting symposium, called "Encuentro CosechAgua." We spent a full weekend discussing Guanacaste's water crisis, learning about techniques that capture more rainwater in the ground and stop erosion and applying the lessons learned in model projects. All participants were given the plants and tools needed to then adopt the techniques on their own farm. There were great moments where some farmers who are already using erosion control strategies shared their experience/testimony, and the group built invaluable camaraderie. We will continue to host this event every year as we strive to help Nandamojo residents transform their home into a drought-and-flood-resistant, fertile landscape. / Este pasado agosto, más de una docena finqueros de toda la cuenca se reunieron para el Primer Encuentro CosechAgua. Pasamos un fin de semana completo hablando de la crisis de agua que azota Guanacaste, aprendiendo sobre técnicas que capturan agua de lluvia en el suelo y detienen la erosión de suelos, además que aplicar las lecciones aprendidas a través de proyectos modelos. Todos los participantes recibieron plantas y herramientas para después adoptar las estrategias estudiadas en su propia finca. Tuvimos unos moments buenísimos en que algunos que ya están usando estrategias para controlar erosión compartieron sus testimonios y experienicas. Seguiremos presentando este evento cada año como parte de nuestro esfuerzo de ayudar a los residentes de esta cuenca a transformar su hogar en un paisaje fértil que aguanta la sequia y la inundación.
