What the Hail? Sounds like a freight train tossing out marbles. Has to be a mess to walk or drive in. Yuck!

Making some propolis tincture today!

So what exactly is propolis? It’s basically the bees’ natural “glue.” They collect resins from trees and plants, mix them with wax and other bee-made ingredients, and use it around the hive to seal cracks and help protect the colony.

Propolis is packed with plant compounds and is known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. When made into a tincture with alcohol, those compounds are extracted into a concentrated liquid.

It’s one of those amazing little things the bees make that has a lot more to it than meets the eye!

Making some propolis tincture!

So what exactly is propolis? It’s basically the bees’ natural “glue.” They collect resins from trees and plants, mix them with wax and other enzymes, and use it around the hive to seal cracks and help protect the colony. It creates a sterile environment for the bees.

Propolis is packed with plant compounds and is known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. When made into a tincture with alcohol, those compounds are extracted into a concentrated liquid.

It has many health benefits.

Hopefully adding a few red ones and red (purple?) onions instead of white won’t mess things up. Maybe some Nova Scotia friends can chime in.

How’s everyone else doing with clearing out your vegetable plot?

We have one large garden in our backyard beside the hen house, and a couple of raised beds. Our small greenhouse produced awesome green peppers this year, and cute little watermelons which our ducks enjoyed.

A few weeks ago I swore I would leave the rest of the cherry tomatoes to rot, but I guess I’m a fibber, because I’m getting the canner back out to make some chow-chow!

The 4 spring hens are starting to lay, and Olive’s babies won’t be far behind. If all goes well, I’ll add a few more layers next spring so we can get back to offering eggs in the stand next year.

The bees are preparing themselves for winter as well. The queens are laying their winter brood and the worker bees are kicking out the boy bees (Drones). No freeloaders allowed! So far, the colonies look pretty good going into the fall.

We are both looking forward to the slower pace that fall and winter bring. A much needed rest, especially for Mike who does all of the grunt work. A chance to reflect and plan next year harvests.

We LOVE when you share with us how you use our honey. I met Dawn from Teas & Tinctures when she came to purchase honey for her oxymels. We struck up a conversation and next thing you know we’re trading products. THIS is how community works. Trade, barter and share your kindness & knowledge. Please give her a follow!

Nice to have a day off! Got fire c***r bottled and looks amazing, garlic, cayenne and honey infused, black walnut tincture bottled, some body butter done, and calendula salve. Thanks so much to Hens and Honey Homestead for the delicious honey and an extra special thanks for the beeswax in which I made the best candles I have in years!

It’s another infusion day!

This time I’m making fire honey. Like the fire c***r, but without the vinegar. By adding dry ingredients only, you get the benefits of the raw honey with all the goodness from the dry spices and is shelf stable.

Here’s my recipe!

Hens & Honey Fire Honey

* ½ cup raw honey
* 1 tsp ground ginger
* 1 tsp turmeric
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* ÂĽ tsp freshly ground black pepper
* ¼–½ tsp ground cloves

Directions:
Add the dry spices to ½ cup raw honey and stir very well until completely combined. Let it sit for at least a day or two so the flavours can mingle. Stir again before using.

You could also make a hotter version by adding a small amount of cayenne. 🌶️ Maybe some garlic powder and onion powder. The options are endless!
