Happy Halloween! ๐ŸŽƒ๐ŸŽƒ This year while carving pumpkins, try these low waste recipes - a classic fall soup and a healthy snack!! This cozy pumpkin soup and these crisp roasted pumpkin seeds can get you in that fall lovin' mood ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™
In Canada, over 80,000 metric tonnes ofย pumpkinsย are producedย annually in Canadaย โ€” but we don't even eat most of them. Instead, we carve them, use them as decoration, and then toss themย away. Hands up if you've done that. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿ™‹- Narcity
These two recipes help to make that statistic a little less scary ๐Ÿ‘ป So give them a whirl!

560 square feet, 141 pieces of plastic, 1 month, 0 trips to the garbage disposal ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ™Œ We did it. We kept every piece of our garbage for a month. ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ

๐ŸšจTo see why the HECK we did this, visit our blog: https://bit.ly/32c5LSo ๐Ÿšจ
Here's a sneak peek ๐Ÿ˜‰:
Living in a developed country like Canada, we often have the privilege of ignoring our plastic usage by simply tossing it in the garbage. The reality is, our waste disposal system 'magically' makes our garbage disappear in to what feels like a black hole. This makes it incredibly easy to ignore the repercussions of plastic use.

The negative impacts of our subconscious behaviours are piling up. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic, 35,000 times the weight of the empire state building. This is due to the explosion of plastic use which has increased approx 620% since 1974, combined with the fact that nearly every piece of plastic created still exists on Earth. ๐ŸŒŽ

Did someone say up-cycling?! Up-cycling is a great way to find a second home for an item you are no longer using, without tossing or donating it. โ™ป๏ธ

Take this boot that has been up-cycled into a flower pot... If the boot was donated, the reality is that there would only be a 10 - 20 percent chance that it would be resold in Canada. ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคฏ That's mind blowing, right?! That means that 80 - 90% of our donated stuff goes elsewhere... but WHERE? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐ŸŒ

For the answer to this question, check out this CBC article: https://bit.ly/3hRPJSQ

The root of this problem is our society's obsession with stuff. So the solution starts with YOU - be aware of what you buy, and be sure to really use and love it when it is in your possession. ๐Ÿ’œ
"We're the ones that are buying too much stuff and then we want our unwanted things to somehow be good for the world."

3. Bake at 300F for 15 mins to 20 mins, stirring halfway through

โœจTIPโœจ As huge lovers of produce, these are our not-so-secret weapon to reduce plastic bag usage... Mesh bags!
Given that Canadians use 15 billion plastic bags a year, these are an effective and easy solution. ๐ŸŒฑโ™ป๏ธ๐ŸŒ

Here are some mesh bag tips:
1. Remember to bring them to the store by keeping them with your other reusable grocery bags ๐Ÿ˜‰

2. They come in different sizes making them flexible and convenient for all types of fruits and veggies ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿ…

3. Wash them when done - just toss em in with the rest of your laundry and air dry
