🎅 Origins of Santa Claus Saint Nicholas

Santa is based on Saint Nicholas, a real person born around 270 AD in Myra (modern-day Turkey).

He was a bishop known for secret gift-giving and generosity, especially toward children and the poor.

One famous legend says he secretly gave gold to save three sisters from poverty—this helped start the idea of Santa giving gifts quietly.

🎁 Where the Names Come From
Santa Claus

Comes from the Dutch name “Sinterklaas”, a nickname for Saint Nicholas.

Dutch settlers brought the tradition to North America in the 1700s.

Kris Kringle / Chris Kringle

Comes from the German “Christkindl”, meaning “Christ Child.”

Over time (and through accents and mishearing), Christkindl became Kris Kringle in North America.

Father Christmas

Originated in England.

Early Father Christmas wasn’t about gifts—he represented feasting, joy, music, and good cheer.

He later merged with Santa Claus traditions during the Victorian era.

🧥 Santa’s Look Didn’t Always Exist

Santa wasn’t always red!

Early depictions showed him wearing green, brown, or blue.

The modern red suit became popular in the 1800s, helped by poems, illustrations, and later advertising.

Coca-Cola did not invent Santa, but their 1930s ads helped standardize his friendly, jolly look.

Happy Holidays from the Sutton BIA 🎄

This holiday season, we want to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who chose to shop local. Every visit, every purchase, and every friendly hello helps keep our small, independent shops open and thriving — and that means more than you know.

You didn’t just check items off a list… you supported neighbours, families, and the heart of our community (and maybe found a few great treats along the way 😉).

From all of us at the Sutton BIA, thank you for believing in local. Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a wonderful New Year.
