Happy Sunday, everyone.
One thing you'll learn about me is that I'm always looking for ways to make Basia's Pierogi a little better. Better recipes. Better ingredients. Better experiences.
Since it's summer fruit season, I decided to do a little "research." 😊 I picked up two different fruit pierogi brands —a specialty gourmet brand and the other the other well-know grocery brand - each with blueberry and cherry filling.
The "gourmet" one stood out the most simply based on its size (I swear it said pierogi on the bag) but the filling was nothing more than pie filling. No fruit...anywhere.
The grocery brand was much better. Nice size, real fruit pieces but the dough was 'doughy'. Also, most of the pieces had rips in the dough on opening the bag.
The experience reminded me of something important: every pierogi has its place. Different people enjoy different styles, and that's what makes food so interesting. There isn't a single "right" way to make a fruit pierogi (we never told Babcia for obvious reasons...)
For me, though, it reinforced what we're just trying to create handmade pierogi filled with fresh ingredients. So we're just going to keep chugging along in the test ktichen trying to make it better.
