Mullein Harvest Reminder! ๐ŸŒผ

Now is the perfect time to gather mullein leaves and flowers soon, while they're fresh and abundant!

Here's why they're worth harvesting:

๐Ÿƒ Leaves โ€“ Dry them for tea. Mullein leaf tea has been traditionally used to soothe the throat and support respiratory comfort during coughs and colds.

Important: Mullein leaves have tiny fuzzy hairs that can irritate the throat. Always steep the tea in a tea bag or strain it through a very fine filter, coffee filter, or several layers of cheesecloth before drinking.

๐ŸŒผ Flowers + Honey โ€“ Infuse fresh flowers in honey to make a soothing herbal honey that's traditionally used to help calm coughs and scratchy throats.

๐Ÿซ’ Flowers + Olive Oil โ€“ Infuse the flowers in olive oil to create a traditional herbal oil that's been used for ear comfort. Be sure to strain the oil well before using. Do not put anything in the ear if there's severe pain, drainage, fever, or a suspected ruptured eardrumโ€”seek medical advice instead.

๐ŸŒฑ Harvest responsibly:
โœ” Pick from clean areas away from roads and pesticides.
โœ” Leave plenty for pollinators and for the plant to reseed.
โœ” Dry leaves and flowers completely before storing them in airtight jars.

A little harvesting today can help stock your herbal cupboard for the months ahead!

Bearberries (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), also known as kinnikinnick, are one of nature's understated wild foods. ๐Ÿ’

๐Ÿ”ด The bright red berries are edible, but don't expect a sweet treatโ€”they're dry, mealy, and almost flavorless when raw. After a frost or when cooked into jams, stews, or meat glazes, they're much more enjoyable. Eat them in moderation, as too many raw berries may have a mild laxative effect.

๐ŸŒฟ The leaves have a long history of traditional medicinal use, particularly for urinary health, but because they contain natural compounds like arbutin and tannins, they should only be used with caution and are not suitable for everyone.

Have you ever come across bearberries on a hike?

๐Ÿฅต Spent the day out foraging in the intense heat, but it was worth every step.

Today's harvest included beautiful Oxeye Daisies for upcoming tea blends, along with scouting a brand-new patch of land. Every new trail teaches me something, and every season offers another gift from nature.

I truly feel blessed to live in a place so abundant with wild herbs, flowers, and medicine. The land always provides for those willing to slow down, observe, and harvest with gratitude. ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฟ

Here's to full baskets, sore feet, and a grateful heart. ๐Ÿ’š
