Well, our first Tea Time with Jason turned into many great conversations with concerned residents! We started at 11am and ended at 1:30pm.
First, thank you to the Copper Eagle Cappuccino & Bakery team for having us. And thank you to everyone who stopped by, sat down, and told me what’s been on your mind. I came to listen, and you gave me a lot to think about.
A few things came up again and again:
A Major concern was asset management and how are they making us money or costing us and what potentially can be had with them.
Other many key topics where:
1. Property taxes. People want to know why their bills went up and where the money is going. I get it. We own property here too, and we felt the increase. Several people asked for a public meeting where residents can ask questions and get a clear explanation. I think that’s a fair request.
2. Proper Financial Reports with proper budget breakdown, which should be sent out quarterly.
3. Roads and water lines. If a road needs work and the pipes underneath it need work too, we should be looking at both before we spend money paving it. Nobody wants to see a road fixed only to have it dug up again.
4. City projects and contracts. People want to know how projects are decided, what they’ll cost, and how contractors are chosen. I want to look at the city’s policies and the records for recent projects so I can understand the process. Residents should be able to understand it too, and qualified contractors should have a fair chance to bid when a project calls for it.
5. City Hall staffing and expertise. I heard questions about what it costs to run City Hall and whether we have the right people and skills in place for things like grants and planning. Those are worth looking into. I want to see the numbers and understand the work before saying what should change.
6. Founders Day and bringing people to Greenwood. A lot of people would like to see Founders Day back in the park.
7. We also talked about our trails and whether events with outdoor clubs could bring more people into town.
Thanks for the great conversations concerned Greenwood residents.
Being a good councillor isn’t all about what I want. I have my own ideas and a platform, but I’m there to represent the needs of the people of Greenwood as a whole. I feel my job should be to bring your concerns forward and be a voice for what you want to see happen here. That’s how we move this city forward in a positive way.
Some of the things you raised today may need to come before the ideas I started this campaign with. I’m going to keep asking questions and looking into them. I don’t have all the answers yet, but hearing from you helps me know where to start.
Thanks again to everyone who came out, and to the Copper Eagle for making room for us. I hope you’ll join me at the next Tea Time with Jason. I want to hear what matters to you.
