I couldn’t remember how many years it’s been since I last I spent December in Hong Kong for both Winter Solstice and Christmas.(Probably more than 10 years)

My grandma used to call Christmas “doing Western Winter “ 做西冬 to describe how important Christmas is in the West, celebrated much like Winter Solstice in Chinese culture.

Our Christmas tradition was very Hong Kong, having a “Soy Western meal” at a local steak house, dipping warm dinner roll in the “red soup/white soup” (Borscht/ Corn chowder), then walking along Victoria Harbour, from Harbour City to TST East, watching the Christmas light decorations, enjoying the cold and sometimes the wind, complaining about it while still wearing a short skirt 🤪

Just like wearing a short skirt in the cold, there’s no conflict in having black sesame sweet soup with tang yuan after a Western meal.

Thank you for all the warm messages and wishes. I hope everyone is having a great time with your friends and family in this time of the year, wherever you are. 💛

Thank you so much to everyone who showed interest in the first “doing Winter” lunch today. 🥢❤️

It was really special to sit down together, sharing food, warmth and conversation.

It felt like the Winter Solstice spirit we grew up with. 👧🏻❤️

After today’s gathering, the conversations gave me a lot to think about and also inspired me some new ideas! ⭐️

So I’ll be pausing the next two Friday lunches for now.

I’ll share updates + new location + new format + etc for the next step🥰

I’m really glad I did this. 🙆🏻‍♀️

It’s a hot day here in Melbourne today!

I saw the hairy melon today this morning and making me think of the Braised stuffed hairy melon 釀節瓜 we used to eat alot in the Summer!

Dessert: Yum Cha coconut pudding + rock sugar longan poached cherries sweet soup

Savoury: Braised hairy melon in forest mushrooms stock “stuffed with” cherry tomatoes+walnuts+ pecorino salad

I will make these two dish tomorrow for “doing Winter”lunch, feel free to join, have a small lunch time together, hope to see you tomorrow ❤️

🌲Winter Solstice 冬至 is one of the most meaningful days in Hong Kong, a day of blessings, reunion and warmth.

After the longest night, the light begins to return. 走出黑夜，光明會再來🪷🌈

I remember we were always being allowed to leave early from work on the day before Winter Solstice, it is also a public holiday in HK, as “we need to go home to 做冬- “doing winter”,
to sit together, share a meal, and reconnect with family.

This year, I would love to share a little of that spirit here with you 💛

I’ll be hosting three small lunch gatherings over the coming Fridays 😌 🥢做冬 lunch 🥢

Eating together, slow down, and share a bit of warmth❤️‍🔥

I hesitate to post this because this is not dessert and it doesn’t match “the brand” 🤪

But I couldn’t help 😭😭😭

Last night I was craving Hong Kong Steakhouse so much! I miss the 豉油西餐 vibes (Soy Sauce Western Cuisine), dipping in “Red soup” or “White soup “ 紅湯定白湯呀？😂 especially the warm dinner rolls wrapped in a napkin ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

I always eat the dinner roll little bite at a time because we only can have one roll per soup and will it feel sad to finish the dinner roll before the soup 😂😂

My 8 packs HK steakhouse dinner rolls + Creamy corn chowder brought me back home a bit closer last night🥰🥰

And this morning was a quiet Cha Chaan Teng feeling 🌈🌞

We went back to Preston Market today, picking up some fresh produce from our Mid-Autumn Lantern Fundraiser proceeds and bumping into familiar faces 😂
“Hey! 喂～～～！” Sooooooooooo nice 🥰

Together, we’ve donated 16kg of fresh produce ❤️‍🔥 through DIVRS today for supporting food security for our local community 💛

As I can see more Summer produce will be around 🥭🍉🍑🍍🍓🍈🥥 so I want to gather them to share with the community, I think keeping this going over the next few weeks would get most of the Summer sesaonal produce for sharing 💖
