Congratulations to Kevin O’Sullivan for nabbing the much sought after Purple Star in February. Kevin’s Port 500 winning Flash Fiction piece was titled ‘The Launch’.
The criteria he had to adhere to with his 500 words was as follows.
Theme:
‘The beginning’
To include the words, ‘celebrate/s or celebration/s and ‘always’
and the phrase, ‘what a journey’.
And this was a super special win. This was our 50th Port 500.
What is the Port 500? It's a members only fun competition we hold most months. Those who wish to partake have to write a flash fiction piece of up to 500 words including the set criteria. The aim is to get members to write. And I can assure you we have had some absolute gems written and shared with us over the years. Competition is sizzling hot!

So, what do we do at Port Writers?
Well, we practice writing (a meeting usually includes a writing exercise of some sort), we learn from invited speakers and an annual workshop and from each other, we challenge and inspire our members to write with our competitions and revolving Port 500 challenge, we share and listen to each others' work ... and we create community - our social events include a monthly Coffee and Chat and a Christmas lunch (these pictures are from our lunch at Abundance Lakeside Cafe ), theatre outings, and a Christmas in July lunch.
We're a supportive and eclectic bunch of people, some of us have published works, some are dabblers, some write for fun, some write poetry, some write short stories, some write novels. What we have in common is a love of language and a love of writing.
