Fuelled by passion & wonder, my art is sculptural & organic; an emotional response to my world.

The Encaustic process creates fluidity & depth. It is highly unpredictable, which is precisely why I am captivated. The Australian bushland is my muse. It is the spirit of my country home; the land of the Jinibara, Kabi Kabi, Turrbul people that so inspires me. The tranquillity, the gentle shifts within the stillness, the glimpses through the trees, and the beautiful, earthy pallet.
And even though this vista stands at my doorstep to witness daily, I paint from sensation and memory. It is an emotionally fuelled response to a natural and transient world.
This reel is a visual memoir of the progress of this encaustic painting thus far. It has been raining such a lot. The landscape carries conversations in the swoosh of the winds and pitter patter of the rain in the quieter moments. It is sodden and beautiful, smudged and discreet. I am both lost and alive in capturing the beauty.

A complex, heartfelt story in the form of encaustic paint. Layer upon layer of wax, damar resin, shellac, oil paint and natural pigments. Building a narrative rich in detail, depth and emotion. Inspired by love, loss and remembrance, the result is a form of grace and acceptance. Beautiful, and restful, complex and emotional.

It is called VESTIGE
The horizon flickers like an old, worn movie
The elusiveness is an aura of glory and wonder
Set down to help us grieve
Place time at our beloveds’ feet
Do more than remember
Experience in awe, and in the now
Her presence and her gifts
Tell her stories, mimic her traits
She is alive within you

One of the things I love about encaustic is the transparency of the medium. Veneers of beeswax (with damar resin) reveal colour and texture from previous layers. It is such a fun and addictive process, it can be hard to down tools. Once fused and cooled, it is such a reward to buff the surface to encourage a natural lustre, further enhancing the translucency of the piece. It is sculptural, and tactile.
This little blue beauty embraced freedom and play, and a balance between forethought and spontaneous reaction.

Encaustic, Alcohol Ink & Shellac burn on Marine Ply

The process here was introspective. The methodology comes naturally; building character and layering subtle colour variations with wax, pigment and ink, shellac and fire. When I am absorbed in the subject matter, the mood it invokes, coupled with the interplay of materials, everything else falls away. When you are governed by pure emotion, the good stuff comes.
Then, I pull myself back to the now, to pause and reflect, and consider the all important elements of good design. That’s the practical stuff, but it’s also where the joy truly comes. The knowledge that it is complete is a gut feeling. It is only after everything aligns that there can be any sort of acceptance. You know when you know.

The essence of this piece is conjured from deep feelings and soft reflection, of wistfulness and quiet simplicity.
The tree itself tells a story. She stands proud. Stoic even, as she weathers the change of time. She is a talisman in our garden. In reality, there is no body of water, yet I was drawn to paint a reflection. Here there is tranquil introspection. She is whole, mirrored by her own enduring spirit. She is dead, actually. But she whispers so much, her messages and presence so very much alive.
