FRIDAY UPSTAIRS: THE HALVES

Fresh off the release of ‘Trackstar’ and with more music waiting in the wings, The Halves return to The Tote (upstairs) for a special headline performance.

Now firmly rooted in Naarm/Melbourne after forming in Meanjin/Brisbane, the four-piece have spent the last few years carving out a reputation as one of the city’s most exciting emerging alternative acts. Combining post-punk urgency with emotionally charged guitar work, their music thrives in the tension between chaos and catharsis.

These tour dates mark the beginning of a new chapter for The Halves, who continue to push their sound into a darker, heavier and more confrontational territory than ever before.

Joined by Propaine and chick, The Halves bring their hometown show to The Tote on 7 August to wrap-up a string of east coast shows.

SATURDAY: GUNK (JPN)

GUNK is Tokyo underground royalty.

Featuring members of legendary Japanese punk rock bands The Gimmies, Faceful, The Raydios, The Headbangers and The Young Ones, GUNK brings together decades of blood, sweat and rock'n'roll from the heart of Tokyo's underground scene.

Deeply inspired by Australian pioneers such as The Saints, Radio Birdman, GOD and Seminal Rats, while carrying the raw spirit of The Dictators, Black Flag and Misfits, GUNK delivers a relentless blast of loud, fast and dangerous rock'n'roll.
No trends. No gimmicks. No nostalgia.

Just four Tokyo punk veterans doing what they've done their entire lives — turning up the volume and tearing the roof off.

Watch GUNK and rediscover PUNK ROCK!

NEXT WEEK: STIMPIES TAKE ON THE TOTE IN ANTICIPATION OF THEIR UPCOMING ALBUM 'DOING GOOD.'

On October 9 Stimpies will launch their second album ‘Doing Good’, which builds on the themes established in 2024’s Spirit with more maturity and depth.

Across twelve tracks, Stimpies portray a gallery of faces - friends, lovers, families, and relationships, and confront the interplay, euphoria and intensity of it all. Doing Good is a garden of shared lives, enriched by local and national communities that overlap and flower into a modern Australian oral history.

On Valentines Day this year, the band launched Planet of Love into the world with resounding success. Their first release in two years was met with a Rage Feature, airplay on JJJ and community radio, and over 500 fans singing along at its sold-out launch at the Night Cat in Melbourne.

This was followed up by Young Life - a rousing banger that channels Oasis and Eddy Current Suppression Ring with equal reverence. A crowd favourite before its release, it nearly broke the floor at its live debut in January at the Young Street Tavern.

The third single - 'A Long Long Time', is a new take on Australiana in the vein of Paul Kelly and Courtney Barnett - a personal, autobiographical note from singer-guitarist Ned McKenna.

Now, with three singles out and the album fast approaching, they are back in the city with good friends W.O.M.B.A.T and new frothers The Sloppy Jalopies PLUS the debut of Marky Magic's Menagerie - the new solo works of Marcus Rechsteiner.
