Last winter we started the chicken coop build!
The goal was to create the coop with minimal cost and as much free materials as possible. It was a huge success. The only things we purchased was the poly piping, steel mesh, used hardwood ply flooring and chicken water ni***es and a few fittings and fixings.
I estimate under $100 dollars was spent here.

The foundation is constructed from blue stone footings with a large freight pallet as the subfloor. The framing timber was picked up from a local furniture maker whom just rescued a bunch of old hard wood and from a family renovating there house in McCloud whom also had the sliding window. The roof sheets were a marketplace freebie and the beautiful door I had in storage from years ago when my friend gifted it with no immediate use for it. The other bits and bobs came from the community garden I used to volunteer at. Which I helped to vacate.

Money can be narrow sighted, in this instance the lack of funds initiated my urban foraging skill set. To reach out to the community and engage in the waste streams and create relationships is what has real value.

Boho Greens is back! Our Bohemian Dreams have been brewing. Keep an eye out for updates over the coming weeks. Going to start creating more content for this page this spring/summer, plus updates of what’s been happening.

Our magical friends Rich & Tao are in the area we have prepped for our near-future chicken coop. Giving advice and highlighting our naturalist ways of working with this small piece of surburban land.

Boho Hives are busy making delicous local honey. Hoping to be able to offer limited amounts in vege boxes.

Our Boho Bees have swarmed! This is Myself (Greg) and James capturing the swarm. The Bees considerately landed in our Fig tree front and center. It was great being covered in hundreds of bees as you will see at the end of this vid.

Boho Greens will be installing an irrigation setup for this summer. Here is the plan. Our farmer friends over in Tallarook 'The Sailor and the Bear' helped us with the design and components for the setup.

Bamboo can be used for building frames to garden trellises even magnificent palaces..
There are many ways to cure bamboo for use in construction.
I have chosen the open flame curing technique. The bamboo is heated up over an open flame until it releases its natural oils, this is then rubbed in with a cotton cloth resulting in a matte finish. This creates a natural barrier to fungal rot and borer bugs (more common in tropical climates)
In Melbourne's temperate climate I hope to use this Bamboo which we believe is Phyllostachys aurea (Golden Bamboo) for up to 10 years or more as a chicken coop frame.

Here is a great resource for bamboo lashing techniques.

Boho Greens have been working up a fever over winter to become ready for springtime!

Here is a panorama of our backyard.

Taking full advantage of this lockdown and getting stuck into the garden has been a blessing

Here is our compost pile ingredients for this spring, this is our second pile for the year.

Composting has been a deep dive, learning so much about what can go into keeping a good pile that is packed full of nutrients when complete.

Heres what we started with for this pile

-500g of Molasses disolved into water
-400g of Dorrigo Basalt Crusher Dust
-500ml of soil bacteria into 9lt of water (aka effective microorganisms aka Lactobacillus)
-One wheel barrow of grass/weed clippings and horse manure which was mowed together
-About one wheel barrow of coffee grounds courtesy of Reground
-200lt barrel full of food scraps
-Equal amount of hay to food scraps
-A few shovels full of our previously finished compost

The pile should be loosely covered and turned every two days, adding water to keep it moist.
If you get the ratios just right you can have ready compost in 21days.

I also like to add in a large amount of yarrow, nettle, nasturtium, borage, and whatever herbs or flowering plants are needing a cut back about a week before the pile is ready.

A great write up on what rock dust does for your plants

Boho Greens have been going all out during this lockdown!

So much to share with you all.

Our Chicken Coop 🐓 is being constructed using natural building techniques. We are using a post to stone style design incorporating rescued bamboo posts and blue stone plinth with red gum, hard wood footings, from old fence posts. I’ve run into some challenges with curing the bamboo for outdoor use. Needing to figure out a way to break the internal nodes to be able to pour in the copper sulphate for anti fungal and pest properties. Copper sulphate is a natural mineral derived from blue stone, so safe for our chooks.

Lots more to be shared here in the coming weeks.

This spring we will be focusing on planning and infrastructure so we won’t be offering vege 📦 boxes as planned. Late summer will hopefully be our goal for a run of boxes.
