Found a PappaRich branch at Australia Fair on the Gold Coast, so I decided to give it a go. I have not been back since they closed most of their Brisbane branches, leaving only the Indooroopilly and Coorparoo locations. Although it was not busy, the waiting times were not great.

The Crispy Chicken Skin was quite burnt or fried to the max, as it was hard and not enjoyable to eat. The sweet chilli made it somewhat softer, but I would not reorder it unless they fry it better. I did give some feedback before leaving which they just acknowledged and said will tell the chef at the back.

The CKT had a good amount of flavour but lacked wok hei, and the Crispy Noodle probably would have been better with a bit more seasoning.

One of the only, if not, the only ramen place that grills their pork slices. Their black garlic ramen, called Black Champion, was filled with flavour and the black garlic actually had a punch. Other ramen places may have black garlic but I feel lack the actual black garlic flavour.

As for their original, Champion Ramen, always a really good choice, despite it being a safe choice.

Their Flat White was pretty good but I felt that the Strawberry Matcha was not as good as I have heard or thought it would be. It lacked the matcha flavour / taste and the strawberry just overpowered the drink. Might be enjoyable and to some people's liking, but not to mine at the time.

The Matcha Roll Cake was yum, fluffy soft matcha sponge, cream and matcha centre - overall not too sweet. As for the Hojicha Cheesecake, it was abit meh for me. I like Hojicha in general but this one was just quite subtle overall and would have been good to have more Hojicha oomph.

A whole fish is not something we would usually order frequently, but the three flavour sauce whole fried barramundi sounded interesting and was a combination of salty, sweet and tangy. Their Massaman Beef Curry is usually pretty good but I did feel that it lacked sauce, it just needed more sauce or soup as some might call it to scoop with your warm rice.

Thoroughly enjoyed this despite it being takeaway, the flavours were on point and good value for what you get. Their kimbap had a few options but both the beef bulgogi and tuna was delicious. Would order these again.

As for the Kimchi Fried Rice, mixing it altogether is the best way to enjoy, was flavourful and had the right kick of kimchi spicyness. I also appreciated that they separated the chicken in a separate container and did not mix it in with the ricw boel.

Although their CKT and Migoreng are my go-to here but their dry noodles w curry chicken was pretty good too. However I did find the egg noodles was abit dry unless you do mix it altogether. But overall, a good meal.

Shalom Indonesian Restaurant offers market days on some weekends where they sell pre-packed dishes and traditional snacks. Having not visited for awhile, thought I'd come back to grab some.

Dishes
▪︎ Nasi Surabaya (Mixed rice w tofu, soy glass noodles, shredded meat and egg)
▪︎ Nasi Gudeg (Mixed rice w unripe Jackfruit stewed in palm sugar and coconut milk)

Snacks
▪︎ Pastel (Deep fried pastry w mince, rice vermicelli noodles, carrots, egg)
▪︎ Lemper Ayam (Coconut sticky rice w shredded chicken)
▪︎ Nagasari (Steamed rice cake w banana filling)

Lemper Ayam - I found this quite bland and although the sticky rice was well made, I felt that the filling was not enough. Traditionally, there is much more filling.

As you can see, it was a very thin layer of chicken which was upsetting. This resulted in what seems like just eating sticky rice by itself.

Nagasari - This was something that not everyone may have tried when they think about traditional Indonesian snack. This was wrapped in banana leaf, a bit on the sweeter side than savoury as it is meant to be steamed rice cake made with coconut milk, sugar and rice flour filled with banana.

This would be one I would recommend for those who want something a bit sweet and as a dessert snack.

Pastel - Think of your curry puff or empanadas but this is deep fried pastry dough filled glass noodles, carrot, potato, egg and sometimes mince. Downside was this was very under seasoned. Not recommended.

Nasi Surabaya - Originated from the city, Surabaya, and comes with curry tofu, shredded beef, soy glass noodles, half egg and sambal

Once you tip it out on a plate, it turned out that it was basically 85% rice, half an egg, 1 tofu, very dry shredded beef, and dry soy glass noodles. And just alot of rice. Overall, lacked flavour, very dry and does not meet the auntheticness of what this dish is usually meant to be. Would not recommend, and would not buy again unless they have a more decent portion (not a container with mostly rice)

For those Katsu lovers, Katsuco is definitely a place you need to check. I did hear they have opened up a place in Southside that I am yet to visit and dine there.

The tomahawk was a decent meal, served with miso soup, a mixture of assorted pickles, thinly sliced cabbage salad, truffle oil and katsu sauce. The curry sauce in their Pork Katsu curry rice bowl was more on the subtle flavour without that kick of spices. The pork katsu itself was great, and even without the curry sauce, I would have enjoyed it.

The Pad See Ew, Red Curry and Beef Massaman were pretty good but felt that the sauce was quite runny and not enough. Also, some parts of the beef was abit hard to chew. As for the Crispy Pork, there were many green stalks and the pork was sadly very salty.
