I went to Chill Bistro in Caloundra with a simple plan: eat lunch, enjoy the view, and get on with my day. What I didn't count on was the cafe being a perfectly executed, deliciously dangerous trap.
My first mistake was ordering a drink. Or rather, two. They were so vibrant and beautifully crafted I almost felt guilty drinking them. The one with the orange slice, a mesmerizing sunset in a glass, could have solved world peace if it had just a moment to sit down and talk. The other, so perfectly chilled it could have been made with ice harvested from a glacier, was a silent accomplice in my downfall.
As I took in the unbelievable view of the Pumicestone Passage, I was almost too distracted to notice the food arriving. A plate of pure temptation: something called a "Turkey, Brie, Cranberry Relish" Open Grill Toastie. I'm pretty sure it's the official food of a royal banquet, disguised as a humble sandwich. The brie had a perfect melt, the turkey was stacked to a precarious height, and the cranberry relish was a sweet and tangy masterpiece. It was a masterpiece of flavor, a culinary work of art, and I devoured it with the dignity of a starving mongoose.
The name of my spouse's meal, a beautiful bowl of crisp lettuce, perfectly cooked chicken, and an alarming amount of bacon, the name eludes me, so I’ll call it a "Fancy Chicken Salad with avo and cashews." My spouse was so engrossed in the "salad of champions," they barely spoke a word. This, I learned, is the true sign of a great meal—when conversation is an unnecessary distraction.
Verdict: Chill 89 Cafe is more than just a cafe; it's a sensory experience that will distract you from all your responsibilities. The drinks are so good you'll forget to eat, the views are so stunning you'll forget to breathe, and the food is so exceptional you'll forget to talk. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go recover from my food-induced stupor.
