The Haven

A safe, open and inclusive weekly cafe where people can come and enjoy being together in a creative space! Some come to work, some to mend, to sharpen.

Tea, coffee and cake are free or by donation, with voluntary craft activities for those who would appreciate a simple, mindful project. Some bring their joy, some bring their grief, some loneliness, some irritation, some laughter, some tears. Many come to craft and create. There is silence and conversation and sometimes singing. So much experience and so many offerings - woven into an imperfect tapestry of connection. Come join us. 💜☮️

Hey folks! Haven starts this Friday the 6th 9.30 - 12.30. Free or a donation towards the coffee.

Week #1 we’ll start on a fabric project making flags, bunting, banners for those who’d like to join in with that.

Here’s the go for Haven…….we set up with some art materials and some skilled people who can help with new and old projects. You can come along and do anything, ranging from nothing (just sit and let the art go on around you) to creating something wonderful and along the way, have great conversations, (or not if you just want to create) barista coffee and morning tea.
Also offered at times are clothes mending, mosaicking, paper art, crochet and knitting. We have an IT techo person who can help with phones and computers and even someone who will sharpen your kitchen knives!
We might do soup and rolls in the colder weather if we get a few cooks to take a turn with homemade soup. A lovely way to finish the session.
Come and try it out. All welcome.

Hiya Haven crew, this week (Friday 5th) we’re doing mending. There are 3 sewing machines coming, an overlocker to be cranked up and we have lots of patching fabric and other fixing things to cover a variety of needs.
Bring 1 (one) loved item that you’d like to mend or petition someone else to mend. If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, this is an opportunity to have a go if you’d like to. It’s much easier than driving a car!

This week 9.30 - 11.30am we’re facilitating visible mending projects at Haven. Got a hole in a loved garment? A stain that needs covering? A worn patch? A hole in a good quality sock?
If you love this garment, it’s worth preserving and maybe even making it better.
Bring it along this Friday (6th) and we can workshop what you could do with it and show you some visible mending skills. We’ll have a selection of patching fabrics, yarns and the fixings but bring your preferred stuff if you like.

Haven is starting up for term 2 this Friday. We’re continuing with mosaics as we all fell in love with doing it with Joy last term. We’d love to do a group mosaic project too, and will start with a small round cafe table that will end up in the garden.
The options are many. You can bring your own project, an unfinished thing that you’d like the space to finish or start something new. We also have mending coming up. We’ll get the sewing machines out and all the fabric patching stuff and you can learn to use a machine or have someone else mend for you.
There’s always the option to draw or paint with Samuels help if needed. Also we have people who can teach you to crochet and embroider. Your wish is welcome! You are welcome to do nothing but chat or let the conversation wash over you as you stare into space. There no agenda. The coffee is great and there is usually homemade cake thanks to Rachelle.

Come and join us today for some good conversation, a bit of mosaicking, some tech support, knife sharpening, cake and coffee, have your shoes re-soled……..ok, maybe not the shoe thing but ya never know!
A few folks bring their laptops and do their work-from-home or study, some come to just be with others with no fixed program, social time with no agenda. It’s a unique and precious morning that has become an important part of the week for many in this community.

Joy is expertly guiding us thru the process of mosaicking (which is how it is spelt from now on! )
For the next 3 weeks we’ll art some busted up china and make unique works of beauty!
Optional bring- your broken plates or whole ones you’d like to use, something to attach the bits to, (A photo frame, mirror, pot planter) and if you have tile cutters, them too.
If you have none of the above, we will share.
