Planting seeds is always a popular activity in the garden. We loved having one of our older students help show our junior primary children how to fill a punnet with soil, plant the seeds and top up with more soil. Awesome peer to peer learning and leadership.

We have absolutely stunning sunflowers planted by our students along the fence line of our garden.

Recently we heard a former staff member Sonya Winter had planted hundreds of sunflowers at her new house. A talented artist herself, each year she would pick sunflowers to paint with her students while they learnt about Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. 🌻

The sunflower paintings had a special significance to Van Gogh symbolising gratitude and friendship.

Each year we plant sunflowers and save the seeds to share We love that some of these sunflower seedlings have made their way home with students and some are brightening the day of our community.

Thank you Mrs Winter for sharing your love of art, gardening and sunflowers 🌻

A super busy week in the garden as we used some of the wet weather to get jobs done.

Tuesday we repotted some plants and sent them home for families to grow. Some of our site improvement team, Neil, Lachie, Niamh, Ava and Jade painted bird boxes with linseed oil to seal them. The bird boxes will be placed in trees in the yard to help our feathered friends.

Today was all about seeds, as we compared seed sizes and types before planting them. Hopefully we will have corn, pumpkin, beans, tomatoes and carrot seedlings to share.

Great work team.

We had a small visitor to the canteen who needed to be relocated today.

A tiny gecko 🦎 came in from the rain but they really belong in the garden. They had a quick visit with the students in Room 7 who marvelled that their feet are soft, they feel a bit ticklish and they can jump quickly.

Our gecko is happily rehomed in the garden with plenty of places to camouflage and hide as well as lots of yummy food to eat.

Great to have our Green Thumbs back in the garden today, digging and exploring. They were doing “Minecraft for real” digging for emeralds, diamonds and obsidian. One group covered the fallen tree in mud “so it could heal”. Our students were so excited to hear Costa Georgiadis Official had been in their garden and have asked for him to come back and garden with them.

Our worms were fed, plants were watered and snow peas were picked and eaten. So much fun across recess and lunch.

Our youngest learners in Room 7 are very excited to be caring for tadpoles in the classroom. The students are observing how these fascinating creatures grow and change each day- from wriggly swimmers to froglets to 🤞🏼🐸.

Learning about living things helps our students understand life cycles, habitats and the importance of caring for the environment. Watching the tadpoles develop encourages curiosity, careful observation and a sense of responsibility.

It’s hands on science action and a wonderful way to spark wonder in the natural world. As the frogs grow they will come and live in the Kitchen Garden where they can live safely and support local biodiversity by helping balance insect populations and contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem.

This afternoon, we were honored to host a very special guest in our garden.

A huge thank you to Costa Georgiadis for visiting our thriving green space. While our impressive food forest, vibrant flowers, and delectable produce certainly caught his attention, it was the digging hole that truly captivated him. This space allows our learners to explore their creativity, whether it's digging for gold, making mud, or searching for fossils. The dirt in this area is transformed into various materials, including potions, clay for building, and paint for coloring. Watching our students work together, building social skills, using their imaginations and flexing their problem solving skills is a joy.

So much fun can be had with a patch dirt, some water, a shovel and a child’s imagination.

Thanks so much Costa Georgiadis Official!

Last year we planted a native hibiscus, which is the offical flower of National Sorry Day. It represents the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations and symbolizes compassion, healing, remembrance, and the journey toward reconciliation. Our plant has had a bit of rough journey being trampled by our enthusiastic students.

After months of searching we found a replacement, but today when weeding and mulching the area to plant it we found our original plant had started to shoot again, showing incredible resilience and strength.

The area is also planted with bushtucker plants; Karkalla, chocolate lillies and kangaroo grass. Our chocolate lillies are blooming now, which means the tubers it produces are ready to eat.
