“Wow! How does it feel?” “Congratulations (again)!” Of course you did!”

Winning Time Out Dubai’s Time Out Dubai Best Thai restaurant award for the fifth year in a row (half a decade) feels amazing. Simply amazing. After falling over, then having a wee jig on stage - the feeling is electric and fills us with pride.

The Café Isan story started about 16 years ago, and despite ridiculously challenging times we came out on top of the world. Our world, right here in Dubai, UAE.

We do things our way, like in May 2021 we converted an old Turkish lounge (and co-habited the kitchen) to create what’s now been crowned the city’s Best Thai for the last three years – it’s fun, exciting and ALWAYS evolving.

You’ll love this little story: In the early days to bring the right people into our restaurant our advertising budget was like, AED200 a month (some months LOL) and back then you could reach a decent amount of people on IG – and our sole target was animal lovers/rescuers because we know you are all round TOP people. We were never going into this industry to spend our time with anything other than nice people. A plan we are so happy to say worked a treat!!!

We adore hanging out with you all, it makes our job so enjoyable. Thanks for that

What to say (takes a deep breath), so we’ll just say it. We’re opening at Time Out Market Dubai.

We are ecstatic to be joining this stellar line up and be the first homegrown Thai restaurant to represent this amazing city on a global scale. It’s been an exciting, arduous journey that makes Birmingham’s ‘Spaghetti Junction’ look easy to navigate, but perseverance and love is all you need, really.

From ‘working’ on the family farms at 3 years old, to cooking for Dubai’s Thai community 15 years ago, to winning a stack of awards, to THIS (THIS) - Chef New, myself and the entire family feel so blessed, honoured and excited to take yet another step forward with you by our sides.

Let’s do this. We’ll see you there.

How did plain old ‘Aunty Heng’ become ‘Aunty Ice Cream?’

Aunty Heng’s ice cream story started many moons ago when she tried to make an ‘easier living’ by selling a Thai brand of ice cream from a cart to the local community in Bueng Kan, Isan. To her horror, it didn’t sell. The villagers weren’t having any of it! Feeling a bit deflated, she wondered why her ice cream wasn’t selling but an old yai (grandmother) who was selling her homemade version from a clapped out old cart with no branding, had queues every day.

One day, after she’d gotten over the embarrassment, she approached the old lady and asked if she could teach her how to make it. She agreed, but not for free kha! Aunty paid about 10,000THB, which back then was a lot of money and even now that’s about a typical monthly salary for a farmer in Isan! She paid a small fortune and quite rightly so as knowledge is king, right? After teaching Aunty Heng the basics, the two ladies went their separate ways, agreeing to sell their ice creams in different areas. A classic example of respect and trust between one another in rural communities. How lovely!

Over the years aunty became a local legend and ice cream expert herself, creating unique recipes that became so widely loved they’ve been selling out for decades and it’s this reputation that’s earned her the moniker “Aunty Ice Cream.”

Some of the stories about ice cream are hilarious and sometimes the topic of fierce debate; white sugar, palm or cane sugar? What brand of coconut milk? Coconut powder? Fresh coconut? Desiccated coconut? What salt to use? Size of the ice cubes? Churning time? Flavours? The thickness and texture of the finished ice cream are all topics up for debate, besides Americanized soft serve - which is a big no-no in the villages of Isan. Traditional Thai Ice cream is quite firm and that’s how it should be according to local legend (ie, the village elders).

As some of you now know, Chef New was in Bueng Kan, Isan recently learning some of aunty’s secrets, and right now she’s back in Dubai creating Cafe Isan’s traditional Thai ice cream range. Whoop whoop!
